Tiki Room Exit Signage

This January 1964 snapshot brings out the signage geek in me. Thanks to another shot in my collection (from December 1963), we can pull back a bit and see exactly where it is on the exterior of the attraction building.

Unless it has been expertly recast, it would appear that the same signage still hangs outside the Enchanted Tiki room today, albeit now featuring a sponsored message for Dole Pineapple.

An additional exit sign has joined the mix that was not there in the 1960's:

This angle provides a better shot of the sign in the first photo from today's post:

What are the chances this is the same sign?

I have no idea if it's the same sign or not, but I like it. I always loved the phrase "Gateway to Adventureland". It just sounds cool. Nice post of another favorite attraction of mine. Thanks, Dave.

It's possible due to size. A friend of mine in Padadena who works for the Mouse ( a bit higher ranking than a cast member ) has a mold of the 4 tiki masks found in the center of the Tiki room by the central fountain. I asked him what that was about and he said it was the reverse mold done on the originals so that they could make more. He didn't recall the exact year that the Tiki refurb was done but I assume it was sometime in the last 15 years. He said almost everything was reverse molded and recast to preserve integrity for future use and duplication. Based on this, I know an effort was once made to recast as much as possible in there for continued duplication. The problem is silicone molds don't last forever so I can't say for sure how often these are recast back and forth to maintain correct shape and size. All of this would go on behind the scenes with the actual Tiki Room itself not actually having pieces changed out until needed, but the process to maintain those pieces is a pain in the butt.

Still, to answer your question, I have no idea if this sign was one of the pieces reverse molded to preserve it and duplicate it.

If you look at the circular details on the ends of the sign you can see the differences. I'de like it to be the same sign but the differences are there.

This is the kind of minutiae that really makes me happy.

Thank you, Dave.
