1959 Disneyland, Pt. 1: Tomorrowland

Welcome to Tomorrowland! Anyone know about the UNICEF looking medallion and flags hanging over Tomorrowland in shot #1? On a fashion note, plaids and stripes seem to be very popular in 1963 for the male guest at Disneyland.

I sure do like the cooooool blue of The Blue Monorail:

I know, I know...technically the Matterhorn is in Fantasyland, but dagnabbit the transition for today’s post is a better fit. So just keep your panties on and go with it, okay?

Zooming in for a better view of the Matterhorn Climbers; it’s been awhile since I’ve seen this at the park.

The gray color of the subs makes them look much more military and slightly ominous...I kind of like it that way! The bright yellow of today’s Nemo attraction is a little on the cartoony side. Not very “tomorrow.”

See more Disneyland Tomorrowland photos at my main website.

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen the mountain climbers in ages, either!

Thank you; all is well in my world this Monday morn. There be 'Grays' in the sub lagoon. Ahhhhh, life is good.

It's the United Nations logo hanging in that first photo. Why it's hanging in Tomorrowland I have no idea! I think Charles Phoenix has a photo of Tomorrowland at night in which you can see this same hanging logo in one of his books.

Major's right, it's the UN coat of arms, and it's probably there to honor United Nations Day, observed October 24.

Without getting political, it's interesting how prominent the UN was in public consciousness in the late 50s, early 60s... now ... not so much.

I kinda remember all the ta-do about the UN in those days. People seemed to think that the UN would have more insight than other normal folks. Even all the old Sci-Fi movies seemed to call on the UN to save them from invaders from outer space. Go figure!

And who could forget the Batman movie (1966) where the "Security Council" (Gotham's version of the UN) is dehydrated into powder by the super villains?

Ha! Then they mixed that powder with Kool-Aid or something...that would account for it.

thanks Dave.
