Hats at Disneyland, 1960’s

In appreciation for all the great photos that Matterhorn 1959 has shared on his blog, I am presenting this transparency from the 60’s with a whole slew of hats for sale (not to say that he appears to have a hat fetish, but...). Not sure where this cart or shop is located, but I figure somebody will be able to drop a comment or two.

See more vintage and contemporary Disneyland photos at my main website.

Wow, look at the psychedelic colors! These hats definitely have a different "feel" than the ones from the 50's.

It's interesting to see the Confederate Hats as well. From what shows in the photo, I would guess that this is a cart, as opposed to an actual storefront, such as the Mad Hatter.

I think that was the stand in tomorrowland - colors look right and I remember them doing the custom names - as I remember it as kind of to the side of America Sings, you would walk past it to go to the Train Station. I always looked but never bought a hat. I think it was there well inot the 80's.

Dan- you are correct, the hat stand was in Tomorrowland. It was almost directly under the Skyway terminal there, across from Autopia and next to the Carousel of Progress building. Looking at the hats, I would believe the shot is more 1970s than 1960s. The hats I do not see there are the mouse ears. I have the fisherman style hat with the Disneyland graphic seen in the left hand side of the picture (and yes I do have a hat fetish.)

I have to agree with Matterhorn, the hats do look more 70's. But it is a beautiful image, clear and colorful (and unusual).

Could it be the Hatmosphere in Tomorrowland perhaps?

Hi,

Thanks for posting this. For awhile I thought I was losing my mind. I kept telling people that Disneyland used to sell Confederate hats but nobody remembered this and thought I had imagined it. I was starting to kind of think the same thing till I came across this photo. The kepi hats were kind of a thin felt as I recall and only lasted a few months with a young boy before getting smashed or crushed or just plain falling apart. The ones I remember from the 1960s were dark Union blue, or Confederate gray. They had a sort of shiny flag "fibery" kind of iron on flag on the top of each hat. They had a small fake chin strap across the lower front that was just for decoration, it could never have been actually used. I grew up in Long Beach so two or three trips a year to Mouseville were the norm. When I was 6 to 10 years old in the late 1960s and early 1970s, my mom insisted I get a hat "You don't want to get sunburned, you'll just get freckles later on when you grow up" lol. So off to the hat shop. My dad always insisted I get a Confederate kepi hat, even though I wanted the dark blue Union one instead. But 7 and 8 year olds did what they were told. There was a hat shop over near Frontierland, it may have even been on Tom Sawyer Island. It sold coon skin hats as I recall. I usually got my Civil War kepi from that place. There was another hat place, it could have been the "Mod Hatter" over near the Matterhorn and I do remember getting one or two hats from that over the years. I do remember this hat shop in the photo, but by the time we ended up over at Tomorrowland, I had already got my hat.
