Art Deco at The Hollywood Bowl

You may not know who George Stanley is, but you most likely know the little statuette that he created called "Oscar." On a recent trip to Hollywood, I photographed another one of his amazing creations, located at the entrance of the Hollywood Bowl. The Art Deco styled monument was built between 1938-1940and titled The Muse of Music, Dance, Drama. Here is a corresponding vintage shot from July 1963:

Beautiful! It's like the old hood ornaments of that era.

Ah the wonderful pool in front of the stage - I remember going there in the early 50s with the folks right after it was first put in. The place never seemed the same after it was removed (think it was late in '72 when they took it out).

I remember reading an article in the L.A. Times about the restoration of this fountain and it's sculptures and how it had been overgrown for a couple decades...so much so that many people didn't know or had forgotten that it even existed. I just can't remember how long ago that article and the restoration was. It's such a beautiful piece of art deco. Thanks for sharing your current and vintage photos, Dave.
