A Day at Disneyland, August 1967

Sometimes the most fun part of acquiring these vintage slide collections is trying to figure out the story behind them. This August 1967 set could go a few different ways. How about I just present the facts as I see them and let your vivid imaginations do the rest? This group/family poses in front of the Rolly Crump New Tomorrowland Ticket Booth with the Submarine Attraction Blue Monorail behind them. I can hear you readers now. “Hey Dave! Can you zoom into the pockets of those two dudes so we can see the ticket books?” Already tried. Just a blurry mess.

The next shot in the sequence shows the Yellow Monorail:



Nothing like a 1960s big blonde bouffant on the Snow White attraction in Fantasyland:



The two gents from our group seem only semi-excited to be on the Disneyland Railroad car as it exits the New Orleans Station.



This time I will zoom into the pocket for you. This guy already ate through his E tickets.



Looking back at New Orleans Square as the train pulls out of the station:



In Town Square the gents get caught by a Keystone Kop:



To the left you can just barely see the interior of the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction:



Last one of my set shows Doug & Jim. Doug's tattoo would make it appear that he was 13 when he got it. I'd say Doug is still pretty close to age 13 in this shot. Jim decided to keep his age to himself.



Doug isn't in any of the shots I acquired, but he did appear in this one that slipped through my fingers. He sure knew how to make a pompadour!



I REALLY hated that I missed this one, too.

Disneyland, July 1966

How about a low-key series from the Summer of '66, where the psychedelic Alice in Wonderland attraction seems very appropriate. Who knows what strange "trips" are inside the cave that this particular caterpillar vehicle is about to enter.

The Skyway buckets have gone from round to square...literally. I will always be a fan of the original design.



Our Summer of '66 photographer attempted to get a few underwater shots on his trip through liquid space.





In Tomorrowland, the Flight Circle (visible at left) is about to close for good (sigh).



I'm sure this little Ice Cream Cart did a booming biz during the hot summer months.



Not much happening on the Monorail track in this shot, but the Autopia appears to be plenty busy.



Guests are enjoying the recently opened it's a small world attraction.



This group of guests had no idea what they were signing up for when they got on the canoe; who wants to paddle a canoe in the hot sun?



For all you younguns, that's Cascade Peak soaring above the Rivers of America on the left.



Don't bother looking for it today; it was a victim of budget slashing back in 1998.

You Are There: Disneyland December 1961, Pt. 2

That Horse-Drawn Streetcar is going the wrong way; we’re heading towards Central Plaza, not Town Square! That driver looks half asleep. You can tell it’s the Christmas Season by the huge star atop the Matterhon:



What a great image; attraction posters, futuristic lights, AND the Monsanto House of the Future:



The Moonliner calls to us like the song of the siren to enter Tomorrowland:



Lots to see here: the Matterhorn & Christmas Star, Skyway (with my fave round buckets!), The Tomorrowland Central Ticket Booth, and an empty Monorail Track:



ATTENTION TO DETAIL DEPT.: Here are some recent shots of the new Frontierland bridge, which was recently rehabbed and then redone AGAIN because the shoreline didn’t look rustic enough. It’s stuff like that that keeps me coming back!

The Devlin Collection: The Skyway

YOU ARE THERE! Today, you are in a Skyway Bucket with the Devlin family, circa June 1969. Even though it’s the square bucket design, I am sure you will still have a blast! Shot #1 is in Tomorrowland, with the Rolly Crump designed Ticket Booth & Tomorrowland Terrace below. In shot #2, that Matterhorn climber looks like he is hanging on for dear life! Let’s zoom in for a closeup.





Whew! That was scary being INSIDE the Matterhorn. Fantasyland is straight ahead.



The last shot for today gives a good overall view of what the buckets looked like in ’69, with Cinderella’s Castle in the background.

Suzy’s Tour: June 1968

Our tour guide today through the past is Suzy, and she looks like she means business. One sassy word out of you and she’ll thwack you with her riding crop. Be sure to note the Rolly Crump Ticket Booth behind Suzy in shot 1 & 2. And so that you don’t think I’m psychic, I have included the close-up of Suzy’s name tag (this is one name I haven’t pulled out of my....)





If you didn’t get enough Matterhorn yesterday, here are two that show the square-bucket design Skyway floating over the submarine lagoon & Monorail Station. I have included a closeup of the daring 3 men climbing the venerable mountain. Judging by the crowds in this shot, looks like it was a pretty full day; good thing we have No-Nonsense-Suzy to cut through the herds.







One more Tomorrowland shot for today; the Rocket Jets really are majestic atop the PeopleMover; their ground level location today is just not quite as impressive.



In the meantime, let’s board the Fred Gurley in Tomorrowland and go to out next destination at Disneyland, which will have to wait until tomorrow.

Getting Mod, Part 3

The Mod Squad transitions into Tomorrowland, which is appropriate as TLand was a very mod place to be in the 70’s. Today, it is just a mess...but it does look like there may be a little lovin’ coming for TLand in the near future if all those rumors are true. Let’s hope. Back to the past...slide 1 gives a nice overview of the Matterhorn, Skyway, Tomorrowland Terrace, and PeopleMover track. And for all you greedy ones out there, you get more than a glimpse in shot 2. There’s a live performance at the TLand Terrace! Dig that Rolly Crump design.



The Skyway provides a nice overview of the Monorail station, the Autopia, and just the top of Small World in slide #3.
