July 1955 in 3D, Pt. 2

Welcome back to these July 1955 3D images showing Fantasyland. The Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant was still under construction after the opening of Disneyland. Look at those workers toiling away while Guests go casually about their business!

Note the early Tournament Festival style façades of the Fantasyland Dark Rides. Mr. Toad can be seen in the background. On the far right it looks like a tot in a stroller is in imminent danger of a time-out!



A nice juicy closeup of Dumbo!



At this stage, the ears were still on hinges and they were able to flap. Well, sometimes at least. That was the theory.



Storybook Land was but a dream at this point; the banks were nothing but mud.

Snow vs. Mr. Toad

Not to be outdone by my recent post featuring a vintage shot of the queue mural for Mr. Toad, good ol’ Snow White pulled through be hooking me up with a "new" old shot from HER line queue mural. Take that, Toady! Dating back to February 1965, you are looking at Walt & Ethel. Yes...that's what was written on the back.

A Day at Disneyland, August 1967

Sometimes the most fun part of acquiring these vintage slide collections is trying to figure out the story behind them. This August 1967 set could go a few different ways. How about I just present the facts as I see them and let your vivid imaginations do the rest? This group/family poses in front of the Rolly Crump New Tomorrowland Ticket Booth with the Submarine Attraction Blue Monorail behind them. I can hear you readers now. “Hey Dave! Can you zoom into the pockets of those two dudes so we can see the ticket books?” Already tried. Just a blurry mess.

The next shot in the sequence shows the Yellow Monorail:



Nothing like a 1960s big blonde bouffant on the Snow White attraction in Fantasyland:



The two gents from our group seem only semi-excited to be on the Disneyland Railroad car as it exits the New Orleans Station.



This time I will zoom into the pocket for you. This guy already ate through his E tickets.



Looking back at New Orleans Square as the train pulls out of the station:



In Town Square the gents get caught by a Keystone Kop:



To the left you can just barely see the interior of the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction:



Last one of my set shows Doug & Jim. Doug's tattoo would make it appear that he was 13 when he got it. I'd say Doug is still pretty close to age 13 in this shot. Jim decided to keep his age to himself.



Doug isn't in any of the shots I acquired, but he did appear in this one that slipped through my fingers. He sure knew how to make a pompadour!



I REALLY hated that I missed this one, too.

FINAL 80s Flashback: More Fantasyland

Today we take a final peak at Disneyland during the decade of my youth, starting with two angles of the Casey Junior attraction (former) ticket booth.



A few "you are there" style shots from the attraction itself:





Looks like you're SOL if you want to purchase something at Gepetto’s Arts and Crafts shop. I am guessing these shots were captured early morning before the Park was open, so if you can juuuuuuust wait a few hours, you might be able to get a trinket here.

Dipping Apples

Nowadays I am fairly jaded when it comes to vintage Disneyland images; it takes a lot to get my pulse to rise when I see a batch of slides for sale. Today's featured image was one of those exceptions. An interior shot from a dark ride is very hard to come by. This one hails from November 1959 and shows the Evil Crone dipping an apple into the poison brew in the Snow White dark ride attraction. Looks like the edge of the spell book at left:



This was apparently a popular scene to shoot, as my collection also has in image from April 1959:



and January 1966:

Gems from Disneyland August 1961

Today we journey back to August 1961 to view a few gems from one photographer's collection. I am also going to include some of the hand-written inscriptions from the back of the slides. This one was labeled: "Town Square." Well, kind of close to Town Square. I was hoping to get a vintage glimpse of Esmeralda but no luck. She's been upstaged by a horse.



How about this energetic shot of Tomorrowland? The Monorail, Subs, Matterhorn, Skyway...so much to see!



Love this one: "Home of the future - all plastic. Real neat."
