More Janet Leigh and kids at Disneyland, 1962

Today I am sharing a few new additions to my Janet Leigh at Disneyland circa 1962 collection. Poor little Jamie Lee appears to be suspicious of the little boy in the foreground. Janet is not really paying attention to the storm brewing.

Will a smooch from mom help?

My eye instead went directly to the cool hat this young gent is wearing:

He can be seen in all his retro glory in this shot, too:

…and this one:

Check out the ticket book and camera clutched in his left hand:

Is it time to go home yet? Jamie looks like she could be ready.

A lovely portrait of Janet and Jamie, with Kelly in the foreground:

The negatives obviously have no date/time stamp, but I would guess that by the time Janet and the girls took a ride on Nature’s Wonderland, judging by the look on her face, mama needed a cig.

Yup…let’s get those kids on the Monorail and take them back to the hotel!

More Janet Leigh at Disneyland, 1962

Actress Janet Leigh is in Disneyland’s Town Square, circa 1962, with daughters Kelly and Jamie Lee Curtis. Those Mickey Mouse sunglasses on Jamie Lee are the bomb;

On the right it looks like a Keppy Kap, but the design is different from the original ones sold at the Park. How about that Disneyland Guidebook? Shown in living color below:

I love the little girl munching on her popcorn; in the previous shot, she is giving the death-look to her companion: “Touch my popcorn and die!”

Meanwhile, Jamie Lee is focused on the Mickey Mouse Disneyland balloon:

Janet & Tony: Before Psycho

Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins will be forever linked because of their screen time together in the Alfred Hitchcock suspense classic, “Psycho” (1960). Before she took that famous shower, Leigh posed in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel pool for cameras in a swimsuit AND high heels for some cheesecake photography, circa 1950.

In February 1954, Perkins did a series of publicity photos inside his Chateau Marmont hotel room (#21). In this one, he is returning to his room after using the balcony from #29.

Knowing his future role as Norman Bates, this shot becomes all the more creepy.

Back in his room, he takes a phone call while sorting through the mess on the floor.

I was hoping the address would be visible on the shipping box, but all I can make out is the word “CALIF.” I also spy a stack of Movieland fan magazines.

Janet Leigh: What to Do?

In 1962, Janet Leigh took her two daughters (Jamie Lee and Kelly) to Disneyland while her then-husband, Tony Curtis, was filming “Forty Pounds of Trouble” at the Park. In photo #1, she seems to be having a dilemma with Kelly, who is crying buckets. Could she be protesting a ride on the Matterhorn? You can see the wheels spinning in Janet’s head…does she force screaming Kelly to go on the ride or allow her child to remain behind and miss the fun?

Based on shot #2 it would appear that Jamie Lee but not Kelly went on the Matterhorn attraction.

Somebody from Janet’s entourage stayed behind to watch Kelly. Jamie Lee is either open-mouthed with glee or terror; not sure which, as I don’t have a follow-up image. These are the things that shape a kid’s future.

Wonder if she channeled this event for the movie “Halloween”?

Janet Leigh at Pacific Ocean Park

During a break in the filming of “Who Was That Lady?” Janet Leigh took her daughter Kelly Curtis to Pacific Ocean Park (1958-1967) in Santa Monica. The film was released in February 1960, so these shots could have been from 1959. Note the little circus wagon in the first photo.

To keep Kelly company, little Greg Champion (son of dancers Marge and Gower Champion) joined the fun.

That ice cream bar sure looks good.

Was this a studio arranged publicity shot opportunity, or did the paparazzi just happen to stumble upon Janet and kids? I’m guessing #1. Poor little Jamie Lee, born in November 1958, was apparently too young to go to the Park that day with her mom and sister. Maybe this is what triggered the babysitting issues in “Halloween.”

This gent has hit the jackpot; he has spotted a genuine movie star!

I wonder what was up ahead?

Perhaps a scary clown? Or just another pesky photographer.

Bates Motel, circa 1965

The Bates home and Motel complex from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” (1960) is one of the most popular spots on the Universal Studios tour.

Want to see what inspired the look of the home? It was Edward Hopper’s 1925 painting, House by the Railroad.

Here’s what the outdoor set looked like in May 1965:

I don’t see Mrs. Bates in the window, though.

The 1965 visitor took this second shot; I guess one wasn’t enough. I have read that the buildings have been moved over the years. Not sure if that’s true or not, but it would appear that in 1965 they were still in their original location.

How it looked during my last visit in 2004:

I seem to recall that Mrs. Bates WAS in the window at the time. You can at least see the curtains are open for that reveal.

Or was it just Norman up there?

MORE Janet Leigh at The Red Wagon Inn

Before it became the Plaza Inn, home of the legendary Fried Chicken plate, Disneyland’s Central Plaza restaurant was named The Red Wagon Inn. Janet Leigh’s 1962 visit to Disneyland with the kids included a stop at this Park favorite.

Ever wanted to see a closeup of the original wallpaper?

Here are some MORE recently acquired shots of Janet and the kids enjoying some entertainment by the Dapper Dans while eating their lunch. Future scream-queen Jamie Lee Curtis seems to be enjoying the attention by the Dans:

...as does sister Kelly:

From a 1960 issue of Vacation Magazine one could see this ad for the Red Wagon Inn:
