Mitzi at the Marmont

In 2013, USA Today did an article on actress/dancer Mitzi Gaynor, which included the story of how she met her husband:

She was 18 years old. She'd just broken up with Howard Hughes, and her agent wanted her to go out to hear Harry Belafonte. She assumed he was some Italian singer. Her agent was going to send a guy to escort her. She was all dressed up in her black velvet outfit, sexily cut down the front. She opened the door to the penthouse at Chateau Marmont that she was sharing with her mother to find this tall handsome fellow ready to take her out drinking and dancing. He asked for Mitzi Gaynor. "I'm Mitzi Gaynor," she told him. "Don't you recognize me? I'm in all the movies." "I'm so sorry," he told her. "I only go to foreign films." She went outside to find he'd brought his old two-door Plymouth, which needed to be washed, and whose backseat was loaded with his dirty clothes. They arrived. She stepped out. Flashbulbs started going off. "I'm 18, I'm hot, I just broke up with Howard Hughes," she remembers. "I'm like Paris Hilton or something." And then his laundry fell out of the backseat onto the ground around her feet. Gossip columnists Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons were standing together watching – one of the few times they got along, Gaynor says – and Hopper turned to Parsons and said, "Who's that with Mitzi?" "I don't know," Parsons said. "But Mitzi must really like him." And she did.

She married Bean on November 18, 1954, and stayed with him until his death in 2006. The above recently acquired photo shows Mitzi posing on the balcony of the Chateau Marmont Penthouse (room 64). For the backstory of that photo shoot, I consulted the best book about Chateau History, Life at the Marmont by Raymond Sarlot and Fred E. Basten.

Noted Hollywood photographer, Wally Seawell, was the person responsible for bringing [Howard[ Hughes to the Marmont. As associated of the famed Paul Hesse, whose magnificent color portraits of stars first graced the covers of Photoplay magazine, Seawell had been asked to shoot a series of glamor portraits for his latest protege, an unknown but promising teenage dancer-singer named Mitzi Gaynor. According to Seawell, the Gaynor assignment was one of his most difficult, even more challenging than his sessions with Hughes discovery, Faith Domergue. (“We took a million pictures of her, and nothing happened.”) “When Mitzi first came in,” Seawell says, “she was so unattractive. We finally had to call in hair stylist Larry Germaine, who completely did her over, creating an entirely new look for her. It took three days to get her ready to shoot, but we got some marvelous shots.”

During the lengthy and arduous “shoot” Seawell learned that Hughes intended to set Gaynor and her mother up in an apartment at Sunset Tower, but it first had to be redecorated. He contacted Walter Kane, Hughes’ right-hand man, to tell him that the penthouse at the Marmont was not only vacant but available for far less than Sunset Tower was asking. Best of all, the penthouse had just been redone by celebrated fashion and interior designer, Don Loper, who had incorporated a number of his own luxurious touches, such as black-and-white harlequin tiles in the entry hall and floor-to-ceiling antique mirrors encasing the fireplace. Kane called the Marmont immediately and secured the penthouse. When Gaynor arrived with her mother, she was overheard to remark, “Won’t it be wonderful? When I sit on the john, I’ll be able to see all of Hollywood!” Mitzi Gaynor remained at the Marmont until Hughes discovered he wasn’t the only man in her life. As Seawell remembers, “She was also seeing [talent agent] Jack Bean on the sly at night—after she had been out with Howard. When Howard learned about that, he dumped her.”

Mitzi Gaynor - so unattractive?!? Makes me think about this line from “Legally Blonde”:

About the only way people today would know who Don Loper is would be if they watched reruns of “I Love Lucy.” In one of the most famous episodes, “The Fashion Show,” which first aired February 28, 1955, Lucy is in Hollywood and wants to buy a Don Loper original. It turns out even a basic little black dress costs $500 at the Don Loper salon (the equivalent of almost $6000 today). In order to prevent husband Ricky from getting mad at her expenditure, Lucy gets a painful sunburn, thinking Ricky will feel sorry for her instead of angry. It doesn’t work. Loper saves the day by giving Lucy the dress for free when she agrees to change outfits for the celebrity fashion show in which she will be appearing. A rather wooden Loper appears as himself in the episode.

Below is Loper’s harlequin tiled entrance of the Chateau Penthouse, which still exists today and makes it easily recognizable in the many film and TV appearances for which it has been used.

Back to Lucy…the tweed suit Lucy must wear only exacerbates her sunburn; Loper’s “fixing” of the collar does nothing to help poor Lucy’s discomfort!

Here are some of Loper’s fashions worn by the other celebrity wives, starting with a dancing costume called “Baldini” modeled by Mrs. Dean Martin:

Mrs. Van Heflin wears another dancing costume called “Palmer”:

…and Mrs. Forrest Tucker wears a ballgown called “Sonata” in the color “Pink Mink”:

Three years later, Shirley Temple would wear costumes designed by Don Loper on her TV series, “Shirley Temple’s Storybook”:

Marmont Monday: Jennifer in the bathroom

In the “you know you are obsessed with the Chateau Marmont hotel department” comes these two images of Jennifer Lopez by Wayne Stambler, shot in 1998.

I immediately recognized them as being taken at the Chateau Marmont because of the distinctive vintage tile. I did have to compare with my collection of photos before narrowing the room down to 64, aka the Howard Hughes Penthouse Suite. If only I had known I’d be acquiring these photos back in October 2015, I would have shot a matching selfie of myself. Hindsight…sigh.

If you want to see more of Wayne Stambler’s work, you can visit his Instagram account. Apparently these shots of J-Lo did not make the grade.

Janet & Tony: Before Psycho

Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins will be forever linked because of their screen time together in the Alfred Hitchcock suspense classic, “Psycho” (1960). Before she took that famous shower, Leigh posed in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel pool for cameras in a swimsuit AND high heels for some cheesecake photography, circa 1950.

In February 1954, Perkins did a series of publicity photos inside his Chateau Marmont hotel room (#21). In this one, he is returning to his room after using the balcony from #29.

Knowing his future role as Norman Bates, this shot becomes all the more creepy.

Back in his room, he takes a phone call while sorting through the mess on the floor.

I was hoping the address would be visible on the shipping box, but all I can make out is the word “CALIF.” I also spy a stack of Movieland fan magazines.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2024 in Review

The new year brings opportunity to reflect on the previous twelve months, which can provide a future forum for growth and positive change. 2024 was a good year that I would say was fairly consistent, without too many peaks and valleys (yes, Melissa - I used the proper form of “peak”). I have still focused on keeping things local, as I recover from the whirlwind life of travel I lived pre-pandemic. Once the shut-downs hit, I realized I didn’t have much of a life here locally. I am happy to say that those roots have begun to flourish (albeit with a bit of healthy pruning along the way).

Anybody who wanted to find me this year would have a fairly high success rate if they checked Il Posto Ristorante in South Park. My definite go-to Italian place in San Diego, it earns high marks on food, service, and atmosphere.

My brain is cluttered with projects; some stay stuck in the gray matter while others are perpetually in the wings, waiting for completion. This year, I finally got around to shooting some local landmarks that I admired as I either ran or drove by multiple times, but never had camera in-hand. A number of buildings in City Heights and North Park provided a theme of 1920s Egyptian Revival Architecture, perfect for a blog post.

On the to-do list still: go back when the neon is LIT!

My niece and her fiancĂ© paid a visit to San Diego in the Spring, with a whirlwind tour that included a trip to Lemon Grove (where my family began their Southern California journey)…

and of course Jeni’s, which remains a Daveland favorite since my first visit to one in Atlanta in October 2023.

Photo shoots continued to keep me busy, including a wedding shoot at the US Grant Hotel downtown:

Melissa (aka “The Colonel”) made her annual trip to California in May to coincide with my (ahem) 60th birthday. More Egyptian fun, as we toured the Museum of Man Us in Balboa Park before heading up to the Chateau for my momentous celebration.

Once at the Chateau, Willis found the sun and caught a few winks. He is the best little buddy a guy could wish for. To say dogs are man’s best friend would be an understatement in this case.

Waiting outside the Chateau for our Lyft before the birthday dinner. No, that’s not a cane…it’s Willis pulling on his leash!

The birthday dinner was at Dan Tana’s, my go-to Italian place when in Hollywood. Mona and I skipped the duck lips on this particular shot.

Willis sampled some pasta, but no spumoni ice cream for him.

This year also marked my first trip to the Hollywood Heritage Museum (a great experience)…

which I reached via Amtrak and Los Angeles Union Station (not such a great experience).

One of many early morning trips with Marlene to the Beginner's Diner at the Lafayette Hotel in North Park (if I’m not at Il Posto, I’m probably here):

I don’t know about the worm, but the early bird definitely got some great photos of Lou Lou’s at the Lafayette sans patrons, thanks to our crack of dawn visit.

Willis and I journeyed back to the Chateau for some R&R…

and bacon (you can see the hunger in his eyes):

A sunset hike up Runyon Canyon was just what was needed:

Always looking to check off bucket-list photo items, I stopped by the site of the former Ambassador Hotel on the way back to SD to capture some of this LA Landmark’s remnants.

The San Diego Pride 5K run gave me my best time ever: 26:08.

Thanks to Ken of Stack’s Liberty Ranch, I learned about the remnants of the trail to Gold Gulch in Balboa Park:

The former Gold Gulch from the 1935 Exposition, which is now a parking lot. Cue Joni Mitchell, please.

October brought a photo shoot for the high school homecoming dance of Marlene’s son. Look at those proud moms!

The bucket list shrunk again when I got to visit Walt Disney’s former home in Los Feliz:

Rudford’s Restaurant in North Park joined the rotation list of Daveland favorite places to eat in San Diego.

My time for the Turkey Trot 5K was not so good. Still, it was a great way to start off Thanksgiving morning before getting the meal prepared for my friends.

The Christmas season started off with a blast, as I attended my friend Jeff’s Deep Fried Christmas Party in LA.

Glad I had on the appropriate colored socks for the occasion!

For Christmas, Willis and I treated ourselves to more R&R at our very favorite spot, the Chateau Marmont. Yes, he is ready for breakfast. Something about this place just really helps reset me from the stresses of daily life. If only I could afford to live there!

4. Tomorrowland On The Move

For 2023, my resolution buzz word was “balance.” For 2024, it was “boundaries.” While running the other day, I struggled to find another “b” word to keep the tradition going: “benefit” was the final choice. I like it because the focus needs to be on the benefit going both ways - both parties need to gain a benefit. One-sidedness rarely yields a healthy or sustainable relationship. I still need more upkeep on the other “b’s,” but just like my bucket list, they will always be works of progress.

Here’s to a fantastic 2025 - it will be what you choose to make of it. If things seem dark, do your best to find a way to shift your perspective/viewpoint. Sometimes that little shift is all it takes.

A thousand thanks to all who stop by, read my posts, and especially to those who take the time to comment. See more Daveland photos at my main website.
