Wild West Wednesday

Today’s image hails from 1957, where you can see a little tot wearing his Disneyland Keppy Kap, surrounded by Frontierland law enforcement. The boy is also holding some kind of card in his hands; wonder if it was a souvenir that he received from the Sheriff? Digging the Sheriff’s vintage watch and ring, even if they don't really go with his costume!

I have separate pics of both of these gentlemen, and always referred to them as Sheriff Lucky, however…now that I look at their badges, they are definitely different. Maybe one is a deputy. Anyone out there able to shed light on the different badges or characters they played?

I know the one on the right was definitely Sheriff Lucky, as that’s how this Encyclopaedia Britannica labeled him:

Wanna’s see his signature? Here it is on a Wanted Poster in Rainbow Ridge:

Perhaps yet another Deputy on the left? On the right is Black Bart.

In this March 1956 shot, a guest caught him taking a break with a pretty little lass on New Orleans Street:

Finally, here’s another previously posted image of who I am “assuming” the Frontierland Deputy:

Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Adventureland, Pt. 5

Not only is today the finale for Adventureland, it also marks the end of this series. As we pick up from last week, we are about to have a second go-around of Schweitzer Falls, aka “The Backside of Water.”

Strange and tropical? I see these plants around here all the time!

Plenty of skulls in Adventureland:

I can almost hear the chanting of the natives...insert pun here.

Our journey is coming to a close.

Susie looks dazed and confused; the wilds of Adventureland were just too much for her!

Many thanks to the Devlins for allowing me to use their filmstrip to scan for all of you to see. FSee more Encyclopaedia Britannica photos at my regular website.

Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Adventureland, Pt. 4

We’re deep in the heart of the Jungle Cruise now, as we approach the hungry hippos. Slide #2 for today is probably about as encyclopaedic as this filmstrip gets!

No worries about scene spoilers here, as they reveal that the animals here are FAKES!

And can you believe they left out the credit for Schweitzer Falls?

Any opportunity to make this filmstrip educational by discussing the animals themselves was lost, other than listing the weight of a hippo.

I hope Susie is holding tightly onto that little red purse.

Another statistic; however, this one came courtesy of the skipper, not Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Final shot today is of a Rhino that is no longer on this attraction:

Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Adventureland, Pt. 3

Yup...Susie’s not going to forget this trip. She wants to go back to Fantasyland and she's not happy about getting on a dirty ol' boat to see animals. Although we refer to it as "The Jungle Cruise," as you can see by the sign its original name was the Jungle River Boat Ride. I get tired just saying it.

Check out the festive outfit of the skipper!

"Danger?" Nobody told Susie about this when she was invited to participate!

No sign of the swinging monkeys by this time in Disneyland history.

Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Adventureland, Pt. 2

Shopping is normally Susie's favorite activity, but not in Adventureland! Look at the face she’s making at Bobby. Where’s The Vera Bradley & Coach stores?

There’s no way Susie's putting that dirty conch shell up to her ear!

How cool for a tot to be the guest conductor; watch out Vesey - he might take your job!

Adventureland sure can make you thirsty! Good thing the Cantina is nearby:

Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Adventureland, Pt. 1

This is the last “Land” featured in the Encyclopaedia Britannica Series. Adventureland really had only one attraction in the first few years of the park, but somehow, the ol’ EB managed to wring out an entire filmstrip on it anyway. Still, this is one of my fave strips as the views of shops long gone are extremely rare.

Here Bobby and Susie can be seen entering the gates of Adventureland; note there is no Tiki Room or Dole Whip stand on the left—how horrific!

Susie is totally creeped out by the skulls:

As you can see here, Adventureland was more of an outdoor shopping mall:

Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Fantasyland, Pt. 5

Hope you like the Dumbo Fantasyland attraction, because today's exciting finish to this portion of the series is all about just that! Here's an aerial view to give you an idea of what Bobbie and Susie are about to experience. Susie appears a little unsure about this one; who is going to be in charge of the controls?

Susie simulates flight by extending her arms over the edge:

Susie is happy knowing that Bobby is out of camera range and that this photo will be all about her:

Back to reality? Well, that's what the Encyclopaedia Britannica says.

Let's repeat what we learned, boys and girls:

Back to present day, here are a few nighttime shots of Fantasyland from the recent D23 event. Appropriately, the first few show the lights and water feature at the base of the Dumbo attraction:

Monstro of Storybook Land:

Even small world looks pretty at night...even better when you can’t hear the song! I love how the original attraction poster design has been used for this sponsorship sign.

Snow White’s Wishing Well area; one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in the park:

A a little “urp” to end the post:
