Audie Murphy Goes To Disneyland, Pt. 4

And now we get to the meat and potatoes of this Audie Murphy series. An interior view of the Frontierland Shooting Gallery! Audie shows his son how to fire Betsy. Below is a closeup of the lady in the background holding her Disneyland Guide.

In the background, you'll note a bunch of stuff hanging on the wall.

Based on this other photo showing Audie with his wife, it would appear that the Frontierland Shooting Gallery was attached to a shopping area.

Only $8.95 for a hand-painted skirt. Heck, you probably couldn't get a hand-painted roll of toilet paper from Disney today!

The Murphy family is posing for a photo with the wax figures of Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) and George Russell (Buddy Ebsen) in the Frontier Arcade:

Here you can see a sample posted of what your money is buying:

I don't think I ever realized that the coon skin caps sold had branding on the top of them:

Have to get a closer look at the portrait as it's being shot. Say “cheese”!

This Murphy family shot is from the interior of the Golden Horseshoe Saloon; wonder if they got to meet Wally Boag, too?

Frontierland, 1957

Welcome to Frontierland, circa 1957! Our first shot shows the Davy Crockett Frontier Arcade, where you can find just about whatever your little pioneer heart desires! Zooming in to the left side of the shot you can see the crossover sign for the side entrance into Adventureland.

And if you can’t find what you need at the Arcade, maybe you could fill your goody bag with a little Bone from Bonekraft!

Last one today shows the inside of the Frontierland entrance. I wonder if those antlers were from Bonekraft?

Davy Crockett Frontier Arcade

Today I am displaying two June 21, 1970 shots of the Davy Crockett Frontier Arcade, including a rare interior shot.

Here are a few contemporary shots for comparison's sake, showing what is now called the Pioneer Mercantile:

The only interior shot I have is of one of the cool hanging light fixtures:

Looks like I have an assignment for my next visit to Disneyland!

TPE: Welcome to Frontierland!

I hope you like Frontierland, because I plan on spending a lot of time here. And I do mean...A...LOT...

Why do I like early Frontierland so much? Because it looks so authentic. Real wood. Everything looks hand-hewn. Perfectly imperfect.

Here you can see the evolution of the plantings outside the front gate:

Were there accordians in Frontierland? Who cares...with the coon skin caps, these guys fit right in!

The Davy Crockett Frontier Museum:

This little girl couldn't look any prouder in her coon skin cap:

Inside the gate:

The Assay Office:

From the Mark Twain comes this overhead view, showing the short-lived Miniature Horse Corral:

December 26, 1955:

Zooming in, I can see that the "Wooden" Indian has not joined the Frontierland fun yet. Obviously, I will have to make a few trips with my time machine.

Vesey and Company play some tunes in Frontierland:

Looking towards the Twain...

you can see this signage. Again...hand done. No computers. Oh how I love it!

Davy & George: Friday in Frontierland

Friday is Frontierland Day at Daveland, featuring Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) & George Russel (Buddy Ebsen). In photo #1, this dynamic duo is shown cavorting on Opening Day, July 17, 1955. Host Art Linkletter is in the background, talking to a young guest, while the settlers dance merrily in front.

If you weren't lucky enough to catch Davy & George in the flesh, you could always visit The Frontier Arcade and have your photo snapped with their wax counterparts. This photo circa 1955.

Fess Parker is shown relaxing on the banks of the Rivers of America in 1956 with Kathleen Crowley in a publicity still for "Westward Ho, the Wagons!"

Both Davy & George are remembered in today's Frontierland; the Hat Company shop bears their name:

The Frontierland Gate looks beautiful here, illuminated by the golden light of the early morning:

In a recent post, I showed the plaque on the gate that tells about the Thirteen Flags of the Revolutionary War:

On my last trip, I finally document all 13 that can be seen at the front gate:
