Audie Murphy Goes To Disneyland, Pt. 4

And now we get to the meat and potatoes of this Audie Murphy series. An interior view of the Frontierland Shooting Gallery! Audie shows his son how to fire Betsy. Below is a closeup of the lady in the background holding her Disneyland Guide.

In the background, you'll note a bunch of stuff hanging on the wall.

Based on this other photo showing Audie with his wife, it would appear that the Frontierland Shooting Gallery was attached to a shopping area.

Only $8.95 for a hand-painted skirt. Heck, you probably couldn't get a hand-painted roll of toilet paper from Disney today!

The Murphy family is posing for a photo with the wax figures of Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) and George Russell (Buddy Ebsen) in the Frontier Arcade:

Here you can see a sample posted of what your money is buying:

I don't think I ever realized that the coon skin caps sold had branding on the top of them:

Have to get a closer look at the portrait as it's being shot. Say “cheese”!

This Murphy family shot is from the interior of the Golden Horseshoe Saloon; wonder if they got to meet Wally Boag, too?

Welcome to Disneyland, 1961!

It’s June 1961 in this first image and guests are scurrying through the Disneyland Railroad underpass to get to the GOOD STUFF! But let’s slow down and take a look at what’s in this photo; it’s purty durn good on its own. The Grand Canyon Passenger Car is up top on the tracks; it would eventually be converted into the Lilly Belle VIP Passenger car which still makes the Grand Circle Tour around the Park.

Over at the Disneyland News Stand there are all kinds of cool things: a Main Street employee in her turn-of-the-century dress, Annette Funicello on at least two different publication covers, and perhaps a TV tray on the right? What do YOU see?

I also bought this June 1961 Frontierland image, hoping I’d be able to get some interesting detail out of the shadows of the Shooting Gallery. Alas, not so.

Firing on a Friday

How about a little “firing” at the Frontierland Shooting Gallery? Here’s how it looked in March 1968. Looks like they might have had a costumed cast member working there to assist guests:

A clearer shot, also from the 1960s, but without all those pesky people blocking your view:

A recent acquisition to my collection is this shot of a young boy shooting at the Gallery, circa August 1968:

From 2015, you can see just how high tech the Gallery became:

Shadows in Frontierland

…is the Frontierland Shooting Gallery! Just imagine a world before video games…or even Candy Crush…or Farmville! Instead of those games, peeps at Disneyland did a little pretend shoot 'em up at the Frontierland Shooting Gallery, seen here in this circa 1960's photo. Let's zoom in a bit…you know you want to.

Yup. Still dark. Those shadows are just killin' me. I need details! Here's a semi-contemporary shot of the Gallery at night:

A closeup of the targets:

I'd take this over Farmville any day.
