Janet Leigh and family have safely boarded their Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland at Disneyland, circa 1962. Most likely current hubby Tony Curtis was off shooting "40 Pounds of Trouble" nearby.



I wonder what imminent danger Janet was pointing at to daughters Kelly and Jamie Lee?

Janet Leigh rides the Mine Train, Pt. 1

These vintage images from 1962 show actress Janet Leigh taking her children, Kelly and Jamie Lee, for a visit to Disneyland. Their father (and Janet's hubby), Tony, was filming a sequence from "40 Pounds of Trouble" at the Park.

Black Bart at Rainbow Ridge

This July 30, 1956 image shows the dastardly Black Bart terrorizing an innocent family as they wait to board the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train at Disneyland. Times were obviously different; a gun aimed at a young child would not make for a fun family photo today.

Rainbow Caverns Mine Train Map

This undated vintage image showing the map of the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train is most likely from 1956. The lovely lady in pink seems very proud to be showing off all of the options you have for fun in Frontierland. This gives you an idea of what existed before Big Thunder Mountain arrived. Below is a June 1960 image showing the living desert scene visible from the Mine Train.

30¢ For the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train

Although it no longer exists, The Rainbow Caverns Mine Train attraction still lives on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to enjoy it during the first few years of the park. Debuting on July 2, 1956, it existed where the current Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction now operates. So, let's gather up our 30¢ ticket and travel back in time to experience it again courtesy of the Daveland archives!



This vintage panoramic view shows both the Pack Mule and Mine Train attractions, which both saw much of the same scenery on their journeys.



In this July 1959 shot we get a closer view of the Rainbow Ridge Mining town:

Cascade Peak and the Mine Train

Yesterday we visited the Mine Train attraction at Knott's Berry Farm; today's post shows a magnificent June 1960 image of Disneyland's Mine Train.

Gliding under the waterfall of Cascade Peak, this one is a beauty! Most likely it was taken aboard either the Mark Twain or The Columbia. Thank you, anonymous photographer!

54 Years Ago Today: Walt and Nature's Wonderland

According to the notes on these photos from the USC Digital Library collection, these shots were taken 54 years ago today. Walt Disney opened the upgraded Nature's Wonderland attraction with his grandchildren Tammy Miller (age 3), Joanna Miller (4), and Chris Miller (5), who are carefully checking out one of the animatronic animals on the attraction. I have also seen the date written for this event as May 28, but for the sake of today's post, I'll play along with USC.

Here they are aboard the mine train, with Walt ringing the bell.
