Monday with Mansfield: The Carrousel

As long-time Daveland readers know, actress Jayne Mansfield’s May 11, 1957 Disneyland visit was well documented. I have been fortunate enough to acquire yet another shot from that day. Obviously a night-time shot, it is chilly enough that Jayne is now wearing her mink coat as she is assisted up on the King Arthur’s Carrousel horse by then husband, bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay. Daughter Jayne Marie Mansfield is barely visible behind the pole at left.

I attempted to see if I had any other matching shots of the horses in my collection. It was a challenge, but here’s one from September 1969. I wonder if the little girl wearing the gold outfit knows she is sitting where Jayne once sat. Probably not.

I THINK this horse I photographed in March 2012 is the one that Jayne Marie is sitting on (obviously repainted and bedazzled). Anybody with more patience is welcome to do the sleuthing for me!

How about that souvenir bag that Mickey is clutching for Jayne?

It uses the iconography from the Disneyland TV show that helped make the Park possible! Here’s a color shot of it from Dan Cunningham’s collection:

Earlier in the day, there was no need for a fur coat as Jayne signed autographs for young guests in front of the Carrousel.

Storybook Land with Jayne

Jayne’s back and this time she’s departing one of the Storybook Land boats at Disneyland. Radio and TV personality Art Linkletter is assisting her off the boat. Husband Mickey Hargitay is on the left, and some poor guy on the right with his head turned has the duty of taking care of Jayne’s mink coat.

I had never noticed male cast members on this attraction before, especially in the outfit with the sash. So…I looked at my collection and sure enough, there they are:

In the background you can see the tents from the Mickey Mouse Club Circus:

While looking at my collection, I also re-stumbled upon this behind-the-scenes shot of some of the Storybook boats; perhaps taken from the Disneyland Railroad? The date is October 1956, which is too early for the Viewliner.

Zooming in for a closer look at the Cinderella boat:

Monday with Mansfield

With my latest Jayne Mansfield at Disneyland in 1957 acquisition, I can now put together a fairly comprehensive pictorial representation of her tour of Fantasyland. Here she is with her daughter in front of the Sleeping Beauty Castle; note that the crest is still not on the Castle at this point. Husband Mickey Hargitay is on the left side of the shot in a dark suit. I love the expressions of the other guests as they see this bonafide movie star strolling right by them.

Perhaps next she went to the Carrousel, which was directly on the other side of the Castle:

…followed by a spin on the teacups:

A flight over Fantasyland via Dumbo. Note the hinged ears:

Some “adult” time on the dark rides with husband Mickey, first at Peter Pan:

…followed by Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride:

Will there be more Mansfield in the future? Only time will tell!

Screen Gem Saturdays: Hollywood Royalty, 1950’s Style—Jayne & Mickey

Although she never reached the level of fame that Marilyn Monroe enjoyed, Jayne Mansfield was still a top contender for the throne of 1950’s blonde bombshell. Here she is cavorting in the ocean with her bodybuilder husband, Mickey Hargitay. Their daughter, Mariska, is best known for her role of Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Here’s Jayne flying around on Dumbo with daughter Jayne Marie, enjoying a day at Disneyland on May 11, 1957:

And just a few months later, she was back at the park in September of 1957, enjoying the paparazzi in Frontierland:

Yes, even glamorous movie stars loved the pack mules!

In this detail shot, you can see an older gentleman in a suit who was also in the shot of Jayne sitting along the Rivers of America. I am guessing he is either a Disneyland employee or a publicist. He has that "official" look about him.
