Vintage East Center Street

Two more vintage gems from Disneyland show East Center Street. In this February 1958 shot, a well-dressed guest is looking in the window of Gibson Greeting Cards.

This undated shot is most likely from the same period, giving us more of a view to the right.

More from 1956

Here are the rest of the batch from 1956 that came along with yesterday’s Junior Autopia shot. First up is Vesey Walker & Company marching down Main Street, with a closeup included of Mr. W. Gibson Greeting Cards is the current tenant of the oft-changed shop in the background. Next we head over to Fantasyland for Dumbo; I have included a closeup of the large marquee outside of the Fantasyland Skyway station, heralding the newly opened Skyway.

Our intrepid photographer braved the Skyway and got the edge of the Teacup ride while passing over.

In Frontierland, our photographer captured the Mark Twain, with the edge of Swift’s Chicken Plantation restaurant visible on the left.

Time to sign off and head to Sunrise service; Happy Easter to all of you who celebrate. See more vintage & current Autopia photos at my website.

March 1956: Movin’ Up Main Street

Finally: the horses have gotten some energy and they are now pulling us up Main Street. In shot one, 2 Horse-Drawn Streetcars pass each other, right outside of GallenKamp’s Blue Bird Shoes for Children Shop. Looks mighty tight, but the Chemical Wagon is trying to squeeze by on the right. Shot #2 is a nice side view of the Bob Gurr Carnation Truck on Center Street:

Just to be fair, our photographer caught the other side of Center Street, and boy does that popcorn look tasty! Gibson Greeting Cards is the shop behind the cart.

A little further up the street brings us to Central Plaza, where we get our first good opportunity to photograph Sleeping Beauty’s Castle; looks like a White Wing on the left near this particular popcorn cart.

Our photographer seems to be tailing the Chemical Wagon as it makes its rounds of Central Plaza; in the detail shot, you can see that the bandstand in the background has yet to move to Magnolia Park in Adventureland.

Final one for today is still in Central Plaza; the Horse-Drawn Streetcar is resting, and a glimpse of Tomorrowland is visible in the background, with The Monsanto Hall of Chemistry on the right.

Many more to come from this March 1956 extravaganza! See more vintage Disneyland Main Street images on my main website.

Lotsa’ Main Street

Tobacco? At Disneyland? Who’d ’a thunk it? Here’s a nice clear (albeit undated) view of the Tobacco Shop, which is now 20th Century Music. I have also provided a recent comparison shot for you to check kout as well:

Next up is an undated and somewhat blurry 1950’s view of the Horse-Drawn Trolley and the Gibson Greeting Card Shop.

I am actually in the process of painting this same area of Main Street.

Next up is a June 1964 view from Town Square, showing the INA Carefree Corner, currently the Kodak Photo Supply Shop. January 1968 gives us this view of the East Side of the street, just a little further down.

Main Street: Eastside, 1957/58

This undated transparency is from somewhere between 1957/58 and shows the east side of Main Street, including Wonderland Music and Gibson Greeting Cards. Would anyone from Gibson like to make a comment or request a photo credit for this one?
