Steve Allen at Disneyland

Steve Allen was big. HUGE. Everyone thinks of the Ed Sullivan Show when it comes to Elvis Presley's TV debut, when in fact, Elvis appeared on the Steve Allen Comedy Show first. Allen himself was an accomplished musician, composer, actor, writer, and comedian who was very well known back in the day; today, those under 30 have probably never heard of him. How some people and remembered and how others are forgotten always baffles me. Nevertheless, Allen and his family visited Disneyland in December 1957.

According the accompanying press blurb:

Steve Allen's three sons, eleven year=old Brian; Steve Jr., 13; and David, seven, leave Fantasyland for Frontierland during a recent visit to Disneyland.

Please…any Disneyland Geek knows that the Casey Jr. Circus Train would never take ANYONE out of Fantasyland. Who wrote this stuff?!?

On the Teacup attraction:

Here they are aboard the Mark Twain:

The accompanying Autopia blurb is just as bland:

Steve Allen gets some advice from son David, seven, as they prepare to drive Autopia's freeway during a recent trip to Disneyland. Steve's other sons, Steve Jr., 13; and Brian, 11, accompanied their father also.

Grew up in the 50s and Steve Allen was a staple in our
house. We all grew up wit a wicked sense of humor thanks
to Steve. And Ernie Kovaks.

WOW!!! These are fantastic! Especially the Casey Jr. and Autopia photos. Check out part of the mechanical structure and workings of the "Skyway to Fantasyland" terminal. I love it!

I wonder where that Autopia cast member is today. It's hard to believe that the majority of the people employed by Disneyland on opening day and its infant years have now lived their full lives and are either retired, convalescing or no longer with us.

Thanks for these extra special photos today, Dave.

Yes, Steve Allen was brilliant! Loved his show and I was only a kid but I "got" his humor.

Dave,

Come on... "Please…any Disneyland Geek knows that the Casey Jr. Circus Train would never take ANYONE out of Fantasyland. Who wrote this stuff?!?"

That's what makes it "Comedy!" ;-) Great post today my friend. Talk soon.

Always your pal,

I have been watching Steve Allen and his wife on and off for the last 8 months on the new-ish Buzzr network. They were often guests on Tattletales and that show is a Buzzr network staple.

Smock! Smock! Smock! Without Steve Allen's humor I would have no personality at all. Great to see him and family at Disneyland.
