Here’s a good shot of the huge lighted star that used to stand on top of the Matterhorn at Christmas. This slide is from December, 1968. Apparently this tradition was stopped due to the energy crisis/costs during the 1970’s.

I'd kind of like to see them bring the star back...maybe with LED's or flourescent lights it would be more energy efficient.
Call me a cynic, but I'm still not buying the energy efficiency story.I mean c'mon, how much juice is that place pumping just for ride systems, shows, restaurants, p.a. systems, computer controlled fireworks displays(Remember... Dreams Come True rules!). I still think it is a p.c. move because the Christmas star is a christian symbol, and the modern Disney company does not want to,heaven forbid, offend anyone.
P.S.- I scanned and sent a picture to Matt'59 showing the Matterhorn, complete with star, shot one year after your picture here. It was taken from the Fantasyland side. Maybe he will use it(at his discretion of course).
James - if your theory is true, can you explain why Disney still has the Candlelight Processional every year? The story of the first Christmas with a backup choir and symphony orchestra—doesn’t get much more Christian than that.
