Market House Interior, April 1960

Vintage interior shots at Disneyland always get me going; this April 1960 Market House image shows guests relaxing and making purchases. It looks very much like an old fashioned market.

This detailed view shows the Red Wagon Inn poster on the back wall. And how about that vintage postcard rack?!?

This 2000 shot of the Market House shows that the potbelly stove changed at some point over the years.

Journey Down Main Street, U.S.A. 1956

Join me as we stroll down Disneyland's Main Street, U.S.A. circa 1956. Our first image shows the Main Street Cinema. Zooming in, it would seem that back in the day there was a real person working inside the Cinema's ticket booth, versus Tilly the “dummy” that's there now.



This one appears to have been shot while our National Anthem was being played.



A tighter crop of the same shot, taken in front of the Gibson Greeting Card Shop.



You can almost smell the popcorn roasting in this little cart outside the Gibson Shop.

At the end of Main Street, Vesey Walker leads the Disneyland Band towards Central Plaza.



Zooming in, we can see a Circus Wagon from the former Mickey Mouse Club Circus, now being operated by Professor George J. Keller.



A Surrey takes guests around the Plaza.

Yale And Towne at Disneyland

When one of your most loyal readers says he was unaware of something from vintage Main Street, you of course have to do a post focused solely on that thing. In this case, it's the Yale and Towne's Lock Shop, which morphed into the Yale Lock Shop. Open on day one, it appears to have dropped off the Park brochure by 1965.

The Yale Lock shop featured a display of locks and keys from ancient times to modern times. Additionaly a guest could get a souvenir key with the Disneyland castle on one side and Yale logo on the reverse. Yale is still at Disneyland as all the doors use Yale and Towne locksets.

Market House Madness

Still no news on what will happen to the Market House when Starbucks moves in, so in the meantime, another tribute to this historic Main Street shop. This vintage photo is from September 1956, back when it was still sponsored by Swift Premium Meats. Zooming in, you can see a few of the A-Frames near the Main Street Cinema. The one on the left, leaning against the wall, is one that was typically in front of the Fire Department in Town Square.



The back of the photo tells me that the person who shot it was a cast member.



Bursting into full color, this Summer 1963 view shows the Market House from a different angle.



I just had to zoom into the window, where you can see that Cold Cuts are being advertised:



A rare May 1961 vintage interior shot, with guests having fun listening in on the 1890 party line recording. Is that a vintage stamp machine on the left?



This contemporary shot would lead one to believe that the same phones have survived over the years.
