Tomorrowland, Summer 1962

Today, experience a brief potpourri from the Summer of 1962! In this July 1962 image, Spaceman John Glenn (not the one of NASA fame!) poses with two happy little gents outside of the Dutch Boy Paint Color Gallery.

By this time, the TWA Moonliner attraction had been re-branded/sponsored by Douglas Aircraft Company.

Want to see those round balls up close? Of course you do…

Below is an August 1962 image of the entire rocket ship:

Old Time Photo Mystery

Within a recent batch of vintage Disneyland slides comes this July 1958 image of an old time photo "booth." I have no way of knowing if this is an interior of the Kodak shop on Main Street...unless someone like Beachgal comes forward and solves the mystery for me! Along with this interesting photo I also obtained this interior view of the Dutch Boy Paint Gallery in Tomorrowland. Leave it to Walt and the Imagineers to create an interactive/futuristic looking display for paint.

TPE: The Big Finish

When a reader emailed me and asked me what TPE stood for, and I had to look at an old post to remember, I knew it was time to wrap up this series! So without further adieu, my Two-Thousand Post Extravaganza comes to a finish. Continuing in Tomorrowland, there are a number of things I would love to experience with my Time Machine, starting off with Adventure Thru Inner Space (or ATIS for those who don't like to type!)

As a youngster, I remember being amazed at how Disney miniaturized the guests!

As I got older and wiser, I realized that the amazing part was that the guests all looked alike! Hmmmm....something fishy going on in that shrinking tube!

I'd also love to visit some of the hokey fair-type exhibits that populated Tomorrowland when it first opened, like the Dairy Bag.

Whatever happened to home milk delivery? That concept never quite made it into the future.

I'd also love to play with the color wheels of the Dutch Boy Paint Gallery.

I'm not much of a scientist, but visiting the Hall of Chemistry surely would have helped my high school GPA!

Daveland reader Larry Gould submitted this way cool photo of he and his mother from the July 18, 1955, the first day that Disneyland was open to the public. Kaiser Alumninum was one of the many sponsored attractions guests could marvel over in Tomorrowland. As Larry recalls, "I was at Disneyland the first day it was open to the general public, July 18th 1955. The photo below is my mom and me from July 18th 1955. There must have been a professional photographer over in Tomorrowland taking pictures. I remember that my mom was holding a newspaper or magazine over my head standing in line for the Autopia. A kid with red hair and a short haircut was prone to sunburn."

The Moonliner/Rocket to the Moon attraction held the hope of space travel, and was a symbol of our innovation and forward-thinking nature.

How cool it must have been to experience this simulated flight. I have very vague memories of riding this attraction, trying to figure out if what I saw on the monitor was real or not.

Being a huge 20K fan, I would have loved to have walked through the sets of the movie when they were on display.

And that, dear readers, is the end of the TPE series. Before heading back to the present, I'd want to get a shot of the now defunct Tomorrowland Skyway station...

and then I'd want to ride a Blue Monorail back to the Disneyland Hotel.

So many cool things to see along the way.

And here we are...right where we started, back at the Disneyland Hotel.

When next you visit my blog, I'll be back to my regularly scheduled posts!

1960's Duo

It's just a quickie for today, as it is definitely a TGIF day for me. This little boy is obviously a Civil War buff (and a northerner at that, judging by his hat!). This photo is undated, but must be somewhere between 1963-1964, as The Mickey Mouse Club is still headquartered in the Opera House.

Here's the same little boy again, anxiously awaiting a visit inside to the Art Corner & The Dutch Boy Paint Gallery in Tomorrowland:

Just to pad out the day, here's an interior shot of the Paint Gallery:

I wonder if he picked up one of these while he was in the park?

Early Tomorrowland Exhibits: Dutch Boy Paint Gallery

Today’s installment of the Tomorrowland Exhibit series shows photos from the Dutch Boy Paint Gallery, which lasted from March 1956 until 1963, featuring “Our Future in Colors.” The other 3 photos I have from this exhibit feature the color disks on the ceiling. Guests could "have fun with color" by arranging the color wheels; musical notes would let you know whether you’d picked a good or a bad combo! First up is from January 25, 1956:

August 1956:

Undated:

As an extra bit of fun, here are some pages from the 1957 Dutch Boy Paint Disneyland Coloring Book; feel free to get out your Crayolas for this one!

What a caption!

For Katella Gate, here is the closeup of the ceiling banner from yesterday’s post:

Disneyland August 1956: Color Restoration 4

Yet another day in Tomorrowland, 1956. Originally, Tomorrowland was similar to a County Fair, with lots of exhibits from major brand names. One in particular was sponsored by Dutch Boy Paints. Previously, I had posted this dark photo that showed the interior of their exhibit, The Dutch Boy Paint Color Gallery; this 2nd photo is from the August 1956 batch and shows a clearer view of the color circles on the ceiling.

We also get 2 nice views of the Autopia; in the background of shot #1 we see the infamous cattle cars of the Disneyland Railroad.

In Autopia shot #2, there’s a glimpse of the Phantom Motor Boats, chugging around in their final summer appearance:

This shot taken from the Skyway provides a better idea of what the Phantom Boats looked, which was something right out of Batman! Holy Smokes! I wonder if the pink one inspired Mary Kay Cosmetics?

Come back tomorrow for the final post of this August 1956 series. See more vintage & current Tomorrowland photos at my website.
