Debbie and Eddie on Main Street

On Opening Day at Disneyland, July 17, 1955, Walt visits with America's Sweetheart, Debbie Reynolds and then hubby Eddie Fisher.

Note the strategically placed promo for Coca Cola. Yup…even in the 1950's there was product placement.



Debbie seemed to be going for a rustic look with her thatched hat and homemade snack tin. I hope she wasn't bringing snacks INTO the park!



Four years later, Eddie had dumped Debbie for Elizabeth Taylor and returned to the Park. America lost interest in Eddie the snake and so did Liz.

Getting Mod, Part 4

The final post in this series is a mix of Main Street & Adventureland. First shot is those lovely girls at the Tahitian Terrace, shaking it for all its worth while guests eat their Polynesian Combo Platters and drink a few Planters Punch Tahitians. Meanwhile, over on Main Street near the Coca Cola Corner, guests are enjoying some parade action featuring Mickey, the Dwarves, and of course the 3 Little Pigs. Dopey has always been my fave; go figure.







For you experts out there, this 1960’s beauty is from a batch that had both Knotts and Disneyland; the building doesn’t look like Main Street to me, but maybe someone could shed some light and confirm if it’s Knotts or not. Knotts or not...I love it. I think I should go back to bed.

Transportation: Main Street Style

Today’s post is for Amazon, who has re-emerged from hiding. My first 1957/58 photo shows the interior of the Horse-Drawn Trolley, which oughta’ get Amazon drooling. And for those of you who need to get to Central Plaza a little quicker, you can always hop on this snazzy red beast:



Whatever you do, don’t pick this Carnation Truck (March 1968) as a mode of transportation: it’s a quick ride to nowhere.



If you wait too long to pick a vehicle, you may just have to walk instead. If that‘s the case, you may need to rest at the Coke Corner while grabbing a hot dog and refreshing Coca Cola. This shot is from August 1958.



UPDATE: A few months ago, I posted a floor plan for the Golden Horseshoe and recently discovered that it was the set design for the 10,000th Show (1961) which aired Sept. 23, 1962 on NBC’s “Wonderful World of Disney.” Many thanks to Gene Sands in helping to confirm this.
