Frontierland Friday: Cascade Peak

When Disneyland first opened, the banks of the Rivers of America were positively barren. Dirt on both sides did not make for very interesting views. Tom Sawyer Island was a welcome addition on the left side; on the right, as you can see, there was nothing but a bank of dirt next to the Mark Twain dock. In the Spring of 1960, that would all change.

The following undated photos below show the initial construction for Cascade Peak (aka Three Sisters Falls), a 75' tall addition to the Park that was built to coincide with the nearby Nature’s Wonderland attraction upgrade.

The overhang you see in the detail shot below was built for the Nature’s Wonderland Mine Train to be able to pass through underneath the Peak’s thunderous waterfall.

This recently acquired undated image also shows the construction of the new “mountain.”

By October 1960, Cascade Peak had been entertaining guests for months.

The water added movement to the Park and much needed aeration to the river!

A November 1960 shot of the Mine Train about to enter the short tunnel underneath the falls:

The structure that formed Cascade Peak and its waterfalls was demolished in 1998 after it was found to be suffering structurally from the decades of water that flowed over it. This was during the era of cheap, when Paul Pressler was the President of Disneyland. Deferred maintenance contributed to the demise of this beautiful structure, while the cost-slashing of Pressler was the final death knell. The shot below is from 1994, just four years before the peak was removed.

This April 2012 shows the empty bank. With the growth of the trees in this section of the Park, the 75' peak would have been difficult to view anymore.

Melinda Goes To Disneyland, Pt. 3!

Melinda is back again with photos from Frontierland, taken during her family’s 1980 trip to Disneyland. As she recalls:

Most of our meals were eaten from the cooler in the back of the car. The show and meal at the Golden Horseshoe Revue (shown above) would have been a big splurge. I remember sitting close to the stage and being awed by the high kicks of the can-can dancers. My own daughters spent years taking dance classes and I have a huge appreciation for the skills the dancers show in the videos of the Golden Horseshoe Revue and the birthday parade when I see them now.

The cast of the Golden Horseshoe Revue, circa 1979 (above). Back to Melinda’s collection with two images of the mighty Mark Twain riverboat at the dock:

The family leaning over the railing:

The Indian Settlement they saw during their journey on the Twain:

If this waterfall captured by Melinda’s family doesn’t look familiar, that’s because it’s no longer there. It was the once mighty Cascade Peak:

Which was still around in 1984 (shown below) but torn down in 1998:

This shot of Tom Sawyer’s Island was also taken from the Mark Twain:

We don’t have many pictures of our time on Tom Sawyer’s Island, but I do remember having lots of fun running around the island, climbing over, under, and through it all. It was a welcome break to standing still for a little while. I also loved the Swiss Family Treehouse as the movie was a favorite of mine and it was just like being there.

Melinda’s family captured this shot of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which was less than a year old:

Melinda only had this one photo from Adventureland, taken from the Jungle Cruise attraction:

I remember being on the side of the boat where the hippo jumps out and it startled me.

This 1978 image from my collection will have to suffice - I hope it doesn’t bring back painful memories, Melinda!

Meet Me At Pelican’s Landing

Where the heck is Pelican’s Landing at Disneyland?!? If you zoom into this July 1960 image, you can see the FUTURE home of this newly christened section of the Park, approximately where the Keel Boat is located.

This is what happens when you haven’t been to Disneyland in six years; they change, add, and subtract to the Park. I was recently notified by one of my faithful readers that the area near the Harbour Galley restaurant and Fowler’s Inn had been turned into a seating area for those who are eating. Just to be clear, it’s not a new restaurant, but rather a place to take your food and park your derrière. At least Joe Fowler’s tribute was kept, as the nearby Inn still bears his name.

More closeups from the July 1960 shot: a trio of Tom Sawyers (or are they Huck Finns?) are ready to take another batch of guests across the Rivers to Tom Sawyer’s Island:

The entrance turnstile to the rafts:

Here are two consecutively shot images taken from the Mark Twain’s journey around the Rivers from June 1965:

And one from April 1963 with the Mark Twain in the background:

Monday on the Island

You were probably thinking about a tropical island. Not here at Daveland; instead, let’s visit Tom Sawyer’s Island. There’s so much more to do there. In this 1958 image, you can zoom in and see guests actually fishing at Disneyland…for real live fish! Just stick that in your purse until we get home, mom.

Another detailed view shows guests on the raft that transported them back to the Park.

One year earlier in December 1957 shows a Keel Boat on the left…

and guests paddling a canoe. Chop, chop! You’ve got to get all the way around the Island, folks!

Also from the same December 1957 photographer comes this second view of the Island showing the fishing pier…

and Tom and Huck’s Tree House. What little kid didn’t enjoy climbing up to the top of that?

Want to know what you could see from there?

In December 1958 you could view the Chicken Plantation Restaurant. Is it time for lunch yet?

Keelboat Celebration!

This week, Bryan Carlson reached out to me to send a graphic in honor of the Keel Boat Anniversary. What’s a Keel Boat you ask? With this YouTube video, you can… re-live the glory days of the most, um, . . . actually, second, uh no, . . . more like one of the top five most popular vehicles to ever traverse the Rivers of America at Disneyland - the Mike Fink Keel Boats. Former skippers re-enact their spiel while showcasing the vistas of their backyards.

As a special treat, here are some vintage images from the Daveland archives showcasing the beloved Keel Boats, starting off with this Summer/Fall 1956 image:

Undated 1950’s:

Wonder what these trucks were there for?

An early color view:

June 1964:

A corner of the Keel Boat shows up in this one showcasing the Fowler’s Inn area:

Final one for today is this beautiful sunset view:

A passenger train and both Keel Boats? Sheer heaven!
