Main Street Model Monday, Part 2

Faithful readers knew that at some point I’d get around to part 2, and here we go! This recently listed vintage image from ebay shows the model that was created for Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A. If you look closely at the original model, you can see that the original intention was to call the store below Crystal Palace. At some point before opening it was changed to Crystal Arcade.

The model also shows the building below as being a Sporting Goods Store; Coke stepped in at the right time with a sponsorship and won this coveted location…

where it still resides today. Could the Crystal Palace and Candy Palace co-existed peacefully on the same street? I guess we’ll never know.

Eagle-eyed readers will see the concept art for Storybook Land on the back wall…

and Peter Pan’s Flight…

and the Jungle Cruise.

Christmas at the Market House

Today's vintage shot is from the Market House on Main Street, circa December 1959. These two gals are resting their weary feet on the potbelly stove. Today, there is no relaxation in this spot; it's the queue for Starbucks.

The stove has changed and been moved over to the side.

To get that bitter taste out of your mouth, here's a previously unpublished 1950s shot of the Market House exterior:

The Gardner Collection, Disneyland 1955: Pt. 4

Today is all Main Street, starting off with a color shot of the Main Street model that I posted (in bw) many moons ago. Nobody was able to comment on where it was at the park, and in this photo, it appears to have a model of the Jungle Cruise dock hanging ominously above, suspended by thin wires.

Town Square looks positively golden in shot #2; the Opera House has yet to come into its own.

Looking up Main Street towards the Castle, we see the drinking fountain that everyone loves to comment on!

And before we head up Main Street to Central Plaza tomorrow, I leave you with this shot of the Swift Market House:
