Art Deco Magic: Rockefeller Center

As an Art Deco fanatic, Rockefeller Center/Plaza is like heaven to me. Greeted by this statue of Atlas by Lee Laurie, there are so many iconic landmarks to see in this section of Fifth Avenue.



Like this gilded statue of Prometheus and fountain by Paul Manship:



The entrance to 30 Rockefeller Plaza is just a tad intimidating:



Once the RCA Building, this skyscraper contains the mural American Progress by Josep Maria Sert. How had I never noticed these on my previous visits?!?



And yes...I was allowed to take photos. It wasn't like being at the Chrysler Building!

Tribute to NYC

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. I still remember being on the exercise bicycle at the gym watching the news, thinking there's no way that what I was seeing could be real. This post is a tribute to the people of New York City who literally took the hit for the U.S. and instead of wilting under the tragedy, they showed a spirit of courage and care that still serves as an inspiration for the rest of the world.



This shot shows the original Statue of Liberty flame, housed inside the statue. I shot this during a 2006 visit.

Last one for today shows my very favorite building in New York, The Chrysler Building. It is a gleaming Art Deco marvel:



To end on a note of laughter (which we all need to survive the bad times), I am sharing a few of Joan Rivers' favorite jokes about how she loved New Yorkers.



"You know why I like New York? Because the city is TOUGH! The Statue of Liberty carries a gun, I was so impressed. You walk out in the street and see a cop frisking a horse. And the women are tough! See, here in California the ladies are too wimpy. A guy flashes them and they go to pieces. In New York a guy flashes a woman and they take their embroidery hoop out and play ring toss!"

Traveling Thursdays: MORE New York City

Some more random photos from my recent whirlwind trip to New York City. The first photo shows the exterior apartment used for the classic movie “Breakfast at Tiffany's” starring Audrey Hepburn.

The Plaza Hotel is an NYC landmark; the colors of sunset enhance what is already a beautiful building.



Never wanting to do what is expected of me, I decided to shoot the back of Paul Manship's Prometheus sculpture at Rockefeller Center. Note the bird on his head.



The nearby statue of Atlas by is one of my faves, designed and cast in 1936 by Lee Lawrie and Rene Chambellan.



Hands down, The Chrysler Building is my favorite piece of architecture in New York City. It is a gleaming treasure of Art Deco magic!



A little late in the game apparently, I finally discovered Serendipity. This is the restaurant that was also seen in the film of the same name.



For artery-clogging goodness, be sure to get Strawberry Fields Forever for dessert.



Does this giant keyboard at FAO Schwarz look familiar?



It wasn't marked quite so significantly when it was used by Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia in “Big.”
