Screen Gem Saturdays: Photo Shoot: Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas

Back to one of my faves, Kathleen Turner, shown here with Michael Douglas doing a publicity photo shoot for “Romancing The Stone.” The pictures that the public sees are very posed, carefully retouched, and often have more exciting backgrounds that give more vavoom to the photo than a white screen or wall. Here are the unretouched transparencies from this particular shoot. They both look like they are having a lot of fun (as much as is possible during a long, tedious shoot under hot lights) and the chemistry between the two is evident.

Two paintings of Ms. Turner that I did many years ago:

Marilyn: Something’s Got To Give

My favorite Marilyn is from “Something’s Got To Give,” the unfinished film that is probably more famous now than if it had been released. What remains looks like it would have been an extremely light-hearted comedy that probably would have only been redeemed by Marilyn’s performance and her chemistry with on-screen spouse Dean Martin. In the wardrobe tests and rushes, she positively glows. It is hard to believe that her life would end tragically so soon after these shots were developed. Here is a painting I did from one of the wardrobe tests. To see more of my paintings, visit my regular website.

James Dean: Before he was discovered

Although it’s a different look than what the world is used to seeing, I've always enjoyed these early shots of taken of James Dean just as his career was beginning. When I did this, I was experimenting with "metallic" paint; I only used black, white, and copper to produce this. In the right light, the copper gives off a slight shimmer. It’s difficult to blend with, but again, overall, I was happy with the finished result. To see more of my paintings, visit my regular website.

James Dean: Comedy & Tragedy

Here’s a set of two portraits I was commissioned to do of James Dean, doing his take on the classic Comedy & Tragedy symbols. This was a fairly easy one to do, and I was pleased with the results. Dean is one of my favorite subjects; he was comfortable in front of the camera, and his photos show a wide variety of emotions; you can read so much into what is going on behind his eyes; makes for a better portrait.
