Monday in Adventureland

In August 1958, little Kirk posed by the tiki statue near the entrance of Adventureland. The dark image below is from June 1958 and gives a better look at the statue:

Back to Kirk - there’s something about the early signage in Adventureland that I prefer. It seems so much more natural and rustic.

Here is a corresponding view I shot back in 2011. Huh. I think that’s about all I can say for what happened to this area.

You're onto something because that rockwork could have been more than... Rocks. ( Carved stone tikis? Small waterfall? ) I'll play devil's advocate here since I just spent the other day listening to Rolly Crump's "More Cute Stories", an audio-only-book. He talked about maintenance and how they'd convince the suits that they needed more maintenance by walking them down Main Street an encouraging them to stick an ice pick into anything. Sure enough, anything wood or metal just crumbled at the slightest touch. I see now why the original wood was replaced by fiberglass, especially given their policy of hosing everything down each night. Still, even if they CAN'T figure out a way to replace worn wood with new wood ( seem easier ) you'd think they could make the fiberglass look a bit more interesting. ....who's Kirk? Brother? I see a resemblance.
