Monday Trouble Trio

Today’s post has three new (to me) publicity stills from the 1962 movie, “40 Pounds of Trouble” which had a sequence filmed at Disneyland. The first shot shows Suzanne Pleshette, Claire Wilcox, and Tony Curtis drinking milk (Disney sponsor Carnation, of course!) behind the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship. They are wearing Halloween masks as disguises; Pleshette as Kruschev, Wilcox as Castro, and Curtis as JFK. The ship’s parrot (Paco) can be seen caged in the background:

This vintage slide from December 1962 (same time as the release of the movie) shows the Pirate Ship in full color:

Zooming in you can see the area where the three sat, including the parrot cage:

From July 1962:

The same seating area from the reverse angle, with a better shot of the Paco, the talking parrot:

Why were they wearing masks? In the movie, Tom Reese’s character was attempting to catch them, chasing them throughout the Park. Here he is in the Skull Rock cove area, with the Skyway pylons in the background:

The area where Reese was standing (note the matching light fixtures):

Here, the three leads are being pursued through Tom Sawyer Island over the pontoon bridge:

…and a color view from 1960:

While this remake of “Little Miss Marker” is not a very good film (critic Bosley Crowther called it “too hackneyed and dull”), the fifteen minute Disneyland sequence is a great record of vintage Disneyland.

May 1964: A 60th Celebration!

Today’s post celebrates May 1964 with every cotton-picking shot from my collection (so far) from that time period. Although they were shot by different guests and on different days, I have cobbled them together to give an overall feeling of what a day might have been like at Disneyland circa May 1964. The first image shows guests on the hotel tram, either on the way to the Park or departing; this could be a departing shot as the one boy has a rather large bag at this point in the day. Below, a happy little guest meets Pinocchio AND Pluto at the entrance!

“Balloons? How the heck would I hold those with this gigantic purse with fake fruit on front?”

Town Square, as seen from the Main Street Train Station:

On this particular day, the Park was welcoming Marine Corps Families.

Mickey Mouse was greeting guests outside the Main Street Opera House; inside, you could also see the Babes in Toyland exhibit.

So much Main Street to see!

The Book and Candle Shop or the Candy Palace? Something for everyone!

At the Cinema, you could watch “The Phantom of the Opera” with Lon Chaney or a Will Rogers western. If you’re not into silent movies, perhaps a new trick at the Magic Shop is what you need.

Over at the Plaza Inn, the little kids get their calcium, wishing they were on the attractions instead.

At least it’s not spinach.

Finally, the Castle!

The crest has not yet appeared above the Castle entrance as of May 1964.

Anyone know what the G stands for? These boys look a little nervous about flying off to Neverland.

Aw…a Carrousel moment.

How that same horse looked in March 2012:

I’ll say it again…Skull Rock Cove is one of the things I miss most at Disneyland.

The Midget Autopia:

Such a great vintage image: The Skyway, The Matterhorn, and the Monorail all in one shot…and kind of the Submarines, too.

This fun group gets ready for a jerky ride on the Matterhorn. Note fruit/flower purse gal is attempting to secure her treasured bag.

Fruit/flower purse gal can’t wait to get off. She’s had enough!

A closer look at this amazing contraption. Oh, and the Cast Member uniform, too!

The regular Autopia in glorious color!

Before there was Buzz Lightyear, there was the Circarama Theatre!

Purse gal is back at the Enchanted Tiki Room. I wonder if she tried to steal some of the fruit from Rongo for her purse?

Those shifty eyes and the cat-eye glasses say “yes.”

How Rongo looked in December 2016:

The Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse was a great place for family exploration:

A panoramic view of the Nature's Wonderland attraction from either the Twain or the Columbia:

A closeup of the Frontierland Ticket Booth:

A detailed shot of the Mine Train:

Note the security guard in the front:

Here you can see the Mine Train, Mineral Hall, and seating for Casa de Fritos:

Time to leave. Fruit/Flower Purse gal is totally honked off. She got talked into buying balloons and she can barely see in front of her. Her friend is doing the best she can to make the best of a long day.

To finish off today’s post, here’s a photo from 60 years ago today.

Wow. How did that happen so quickly? See more Disneyland photos from my collection at my main website.

A Day at Disneyland, September 1969: Pt. 2

It’s September 1969 and we’re back at Disneyland. We know it’s the past, because the Autopia’s vehicles are gas-powered. Oh wait, they still are. What’s going on below? Is a Cast Member getting chastised for taking selfies? Or maybe he was late for his shift?

These two are looking over Tomorrowland from the Skyway bucket. They should be taking photos; it kind of sucks now.

PeopleMover, Matterhorn, Skyway buckets…it’s just BEE-YOO-TI-FULL!

Someone in the bucket was wise enough to be capturing these!

Here we can also see the Monorail tracks and it’s a small world.

Once they flew through the Matterhorn unscathed, the camera came out again to capture the splendor of Skull Rock Cove:

A delightful little rest/eating area, tucked away behind the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship:

Once more for those who haven’t read this here: I really miss this area most.

A long line for the Matterhon Bobsleds; back then, nobody cared about whiplash.

I see vintage brochuresw and a camera…and a beauty of a beehive hairdo!

An interior shot from the Carousel of Progress attraction:

I’m too lazy to figure out the placement of this area, but I am guessing it’s somewhere near Central Plaza. Perhaps what was once referred to as Alpine Gardens? If not, please don’t sue me.

A Kodak Picture Spot sign is to the left of Snow White and Dopey:

Two consecutive shots of the Disneyland Band in front of the Castle…

and one detailed view. Anyone know the conductor or band members?

Over in Storybook Land, the Bold Lochinvar boat is ready to get loaded up for another trip through Monstro.

Who’s the stuff shirt on the left? Was this when a male cast member had to be a lead because it female’s could not perform that role? He looks clueless.

Another Storybook Land shot, another aeronautic do, perfectly aerosoled.

A closeup of Peter Pan Park:

Thanks for joining me on this 9/69 tour!
