Palm Springs at Night

Shooting a city at night is one of my favorite things to do; everything looks different and often more magical. Palm Springs is not really known for its nightlife, but can still provide an interesting opportunity for wandering aimlessly with my camera. This little fountain outside of an apartment complex had me mesmerized. This particular sign for the Casa Cody hotel didn’t do much for me creatively…



But THIS neon sign definitely grabbed my attention!



More neon; I thought about checking this place out, but was feeling lazy. Isn’t that part of Palm Springs’ charm? Being lazy?



Lulu, a California Bistro. Go for the decor; leave because of the food. Not a Daveland favorite.



Not sure I quite captured what inspired me here, but I loved the way the shadow of the tree fell upon the stucco of this house.



Palm Springs shuts down early. Like I said…no night life, which is perfect for someone who likes to capture areas devoid of peeps.



Still closed…but the signs burn brightly!

Welcome to Memphis!

My apologies for the sporadic posting on this blog, but life gets in the way...and usually, that’s a good thing. When I’m not blogging, that means I’m out enjoying the sites and usually got my camera with me. Went to Memphis last week; 1400 photos later, I am back home. Here is a smattering of what I shot...sure had a great time. Not a single bad meal and plenty to marvel at. More to come…

The First Time I Saw Vegas, 2002

There are some things you see that stick in your memory; the first time I saw Vegas is one of them. January 2002 was the first time I had visited the fabled city, and it would be hard to forget my first impression as my cab was wading through the traffic of the strip at night. I am glad my first sight of Vegas was at night, as I definitely would not have been as impressed if my plane had landed during the day.



I remember my brain being on sensory overload, not knowing where to look next...it was definitely an ADD fest for the eyes, bouncing from one neon sign to the next.



Wanting to get great tickets for the Cirque de Soleil show “O,” I decided to stay at The Bellagio.



Apparently, they were either light on bookings or thought that I was some kind of gambling mogul, because they set me up in a pimped out suite that was bigger than my apartment.



Although it is definitely luxurious, The Bellagio is definitely not my vibe as far as design goes; just like Vegas, it’s very over the top and slightly cold.



Still, my goal was accomplished as I did score excellent seats for “O,” which was absolutely incredible. I am not a huge Cirque de Soleil fan, but this show blew me away.

Signage in LA

My name is Dave and I’m a signage geek. Yup, it’s true. Here are a few classics from a recent trip to Hollywood. Even tacky can be fun!



This place is a way cool hangout. A joint, if you will, which is the best kind of place to go.
