Vintage Disneyland, Circa November 1971

Welcome to November 1971 at Disneyland…or at least according to the date stamps on these images from different batches vintage slides! First up is the Disneyland Hotel. In the detailed view, you can see what appears to be the Lido Fashions shop and the sign at right for the Disneyland Hotel Coral Pool.



Below is an image of the Marina, which debuted in 1970.



I have no idea what that submarine/tank thing was for. Anyone?



Because I’m nosey, I had to peer into the rooms.



Inside the Park, the Snow White waterfall is working just fine.



You can just see the tip of Dopey’s fishing pole:



The waterfall is also working at the Matterhorn:

Over at the Captain Hook’s Pirate Ship Restaurant (formerly known as Chicken of the Sea):

This image of the Main Street Train Station tips me off that this slide at least is most likely not from November, but was probably shot in July, due to the patriotic bunting on the lamppost.



Final one for today shows the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse; not a view you often see.

February 1970 at Disneyland, Pt. 1

Today’s tour of the past begins in Disneyland’s Town Square, circa February 1970. These lucky tots got to see Mickey himself as they entered the Park. Let’s zoom in for a look at the ticket book:



It appears that these kids were EXTRA lucky, as they were part of the Magic Kingdom Club, which ran from 1957—2000. It was an early Annual Passport program to the park that offered memberships free of charge both for companies and their employees, encouraging families to visit the parks by giving them discounts. Meanwhile, get a load of the topper on Mickey’s cane!



In the next shot of the batch, the kids have multiplied. The little girl on the right has a matching purse; it looks big enough to buy out Main Street, U.S.A.

Next up: it’s a small world!



By this time, the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship Restaurant had morphed into Captain Hook’s. Bye-bye outside corporate sponsorship!

Last one for this batch today drops the families off at the Castle.

Chicken of the Sea: That Girl!

Our denim-on-denim gal that we saw at the Castle today is doing her best Marlo Thomas on the deck of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship in Fantasyland. Aren’t you digging her 70s style?

Actually, by the time this October 1977 photo was taken, the “Chicken of the Sea” Pirate Ship had been re-branded as “Captain Hook’s Galley.” Who needs that pesky “Chicken of the Sea” sponsor?!?

Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This, Pt. 2

Reversing the way I typically do things, today's post starts off with the closeup. Captain Hook looks as if he's having one of those days in this November 1971 photo.

Pulling back, you can see that the Chicken of the Sea sponsorship is no more and that this faux-floating vessel is now known as Captain Hook's Pirate Ship Restaurant.



Select from Seafood Sandwiches, Salad, Desserts, and Hot & Cold Beverages.



Maybe Captain Hook was upset because sales were down. It's hard to compete with a mermaid carrying a wand!

Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship

Yesterday, after checking out Tim’s incredible (but sad) post on the removal of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate ship, I thought I’d post these 2 undated shots from approximately 1956/57. The first one is probably my best shot of the logo on the back of the ship. Eventually, the name was changed to Captain Hook’s Pirate Ship Restaurant, but the lady still remained.
