80s Flashback: Storybook Land Pt. 2

This morning it's back to Storybook Land, circa the 1980s. Let's zoom in a bit for a better look at Gepetto's Village. How many previously unnoticed details can you see?

Views of two of the windmills that were featured in the 1937 Silly Symphony, "The Old Mill."

Last one for today shows Alice's Village...as in Alice in Wonderland.

Just read the sign if you don't believe me!

A functioning water wheel. Wow!

Still more 80s magic to come!

Frozen comes to Storybook Land

This will probably come as a shock to those who read this blog for its Disney content, but I have yet to see the movie "Frozen." Still, I was anxious to see how the village of Arendelle would fit into Disneyland's classic Storybook Land attraction. Just like the state it resides in, there is only so much real estate available at Disneyland, so to make room for Arendelle, something would have to be sacrificed. In this case, the Windmills (shown above) would have to go. I am sure there are many diehards like me who are sad to see this representation from the innovative 1937 animated Disney short "The Old Mill" bite the dust, but I can totally understand. How many of today's generation have even heard of "The Old Mill"?

In my first photo, note the shadow of Casey Junior. Storybook Land was closed last weekend, but I didn't let that deter me from getting my photos. I simply headed over to Casey and bumped up the shutter speed on my camera!

Arendelle fits in fairly well, but at the same time, because of the size of its castle, it is a bit overwhelming.

The mountains behind Arendelle are a nice match with those behind Gepetto's village as well as the peak of the Matterhorn that looms over all.

The details are great, too, including this little cabin:

The back side of Arendelle:

Overall, I would say that the newest addition/change to Storybook Land is a positive one.

Disneyland, Summer of 1963: Fantasyland

Pose for the nice man! It's always great to get a view of the person taking the photos. Of course I have to get a closer look at the camera being used, too. This guy can take a photo AND smoke his cig all at the same time. I wonder how he'd do walking and chewing gum?

A closeup of one of the windmills on the Storybook Land attraction:

The vintage guests seemed to enjoy the teacups; you might remember the previous post that also included an image of them with the shot of the Fantasyland Theatre in the background.

The girl in the right looks like she might be close to hurling! Oops!

1959 Disneyland, pt. 3: Random Big Finish

I’m talking hodge-podge here, folks...but not necessarily in a bad way. The Jungle Cruise is packing ’em in, back when the Skippers were dressed in tropical shirts and straw hats that helped keep the Anaheim sun from burning their heads. The Mekong Maiden has since been retired and no longer works the JC circuit.

This photo was too early for the Swiss Family Robinson Tree (and seemed to be the wrong location, too), so I am guessing it is from the Treehouse on Tom Sawyer Island.

Over in Storybook Land, only 2 of the 3 windmills made it into our photographer’s frame:

I’d never noticed this sign before: Giant’s Patchwork Quilt. I believe this sign has long since disappeared, too:

Another guess is that this one was shot from a Storybook Land Canal Boat, showing the undercarriage of a Skyway Bucket:

Early Disneyland: Welcome to Storybook Land!

This undated batch of black and white negatives is a fantastic look at Storybook Land (and a few other cool places, too, as you’ll see in tomorrow's post). Based upon the sign to the left of the Castle and the way Storybook Land looks (with no Matterhorn in the background), I would guess that these negatives date to about 1957 (or thereabouts). So sit back and enjoy this trip in (of course!) chronological order. Our first view is of the village from Alice in Wonderland:

A beautiful shot of the original Toad Hall area:

The home of the seven dwarfs looks empty:

of course I had to zoom in on their signage:

Can’t miss taking a shot of Cinderella’s Castle:

Whoa! Here comes Casey Junior above us!

This looks like your normal shot of the Windmill area...

Until we zoom in closer and see what appears to be an empty light socket waiting for a bulb!

Storybook Land has always been fascinating to me; the attention to detail blows my mind. This is one journey I would love to have go much slower, as the Canal Boats race by too quickly to notice everything. I’m sure that’s the point to keep the guests coming back!
