Temple Tuesday: Shirley's Got Mail

In this 1943 photo, Shirley Temple checks to see what’s in her mailbox at her Rockingham Avenue home in Brentwood:

From the same photo shoot, Shirley relaxes by the lily pond outside the flagstone patio near the entrance to the home:

Was the water really cold, or was Shirley just tired of having her photo snapped?

Today, this is the less-than-exciting mailbox one sees in front of the former Temple residence:

The home still remains, although the house (and the property) was subdivided many years ago and now consists of three parcels:

Melissa (aka “The Colonel”) and Army members Shirley Jean and Mary were fortunate enough to get to tour the home during their last visit to California:

I wonder if they checked the mailbox?

Disneyland 1963 in BW

This series of negatives from 1963 yielded some very clear shots of Disneyland, beginning with this view of the entrance. Oh those vintage attraction posters are magical!

This lovely lady is about to mail a letter, bragging to her friends back home about what a wonderful time she is having at Disneyland...while they're not. Oh, that hurts.

Made in St. Louis. Wonder if these are the same lamps there today? Banner Iron Works closed in 1986; looks like most of the buildings belonging to it have been demolished.

Wish I could read that address!

This cast member is assisting the guest onto the Amazon Belle (just for you, Matthew!).

Posing with an Indian at the Indian Village.

That wobbly old bridge at Tom Sawyer's Island!

I believe that's a bit of Rainbow Ridge visible in the background!

Spring 1975, Pt. 3

Back to our 1975 series, we now meet the Maude & Phyllis (the names seem to fit these gals so that’s what I’m calling them). Phyllis has just sent a lovely postcard back home to the gals in her local Bird Watching Club. Surprisingly enough, these mailboxes still look pretty much the same:

Many shots of the gals yucking it up with characters from "Robin Hood," which had been released 2 years prior to these photos being taken:

Phyllis is telling the gals back home to eat their hearts out with this one!

Meeting of the minds, perhaps? Note bored cast member in background.

As always, beautiful floral plantings in Central Plaza, pre-Partners Statue:

The final photo in the series provides us with a last chance to get a balloon before we leave the park:

Disneyland 1956, Fantasyland Pt. 1

When last we visited 1956, we were standing in front of the castle; today let’s journey across the drawbridge into Fantasyland. Our first view is full of things to do: The Carrousel, shopping at the Mad Hatter, Peter Pan, and overhead is the Skyway. View #2 shows both Merlin’s Magic Shop & The Carrousel; I have included closeups of the Ticket Booth & Merlin’s.

Interestingly enough, the design for the Disneyland mailboxes has changed very little over the years; compare to this contemporary shot:

One more shot of Merlin’s:

This shot shows the Fantasyland Skyway Station, as well as a few whimsical benches that we can sit on and watch the guests go by.
