Crowds at Disneyland

This undated 1950s image shows that crowds are nothing new at Disneyland. Still, I would say the attire has definitely changed, as many of the present-day guests look like they just rolled out of bed. Not so in this vintage view. These guests are crammed together outside the Tomorrowland Circarama attraction. Imagine standing in the middle of a 360 degree screen, being immersed in a movie...that's pretty much what this attraction was about.

Another undated 1950s view:

For a less congested view of the overall entrance, check out this previously posted image from September 1959:

The attraction in this location today is Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters:

Mary Blair Monday

While this installation of classic Mary Blair in Tomorrowland is greatly missed, it has always seemed a bit out of place stylistically for the land which it was created. This September 1968 shot provides a nice view of this long-gone mural by the beloved Disney artist.

Today, Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters has taken over the real estate where Blair once resided.

Mary Blair Tomorrowland Murals, circa 1974

Another recent find for me are these 1974 black and white shots that will bring both joy and sadness to readers. The simple childlike designs that artist Mary Blair created for "New" Tomorrowland are sure to delight all who see them, even if they are a bit of a stretch design-wise for the rest of what was created in this area of the Park back in 1967.

I am still amazed that these were covered up without any thought to preserving Blair's work.

I am fairly certain that nobody will mourn or regret it when the Disney Corporation decides to take these murals down.

Mickey's Halloween Party, Pt. 1

It was a little weird being back at Disneyland after a 6 month absence. Hard to believe it has been that long since my last visit, but also kind of nice to have a little bit of a break. As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder! Anastasia B. & I decided to go in costume this year for Mickey's Halloween Party. She chose a sassy Queen of Hearts, and I picked 1966 Robin. Just one of those things on my bucket list.

Neither one of us had eaten lunch that day, so the first order of business was a fried chicken dinner at the Plaza Inn. We were not disappointed by the golden fried goodness that was heaped upon the plate. We skipped dessert though, knowing there would be other sugar-laden treats throughout the night.

The Plaza Inn looked great; still a dining favorite at the Park.

Have you ever noticed the initials in the valance?

Our first attraction was Buzz Lightyear. Although I rarely beat AB's score, I still have fun riding it.

I am typically too busy attempting to score points to take photos.

My somewhat lame score.

Note the concentration.

Outside, the Monsters University Dance Party was rocking' Tomorrowland.

The Subs were back in action, although we decided not to ride them.

The lagoon sure looks great at night.

Across the way the Matterhorn looked beautiful, too. It's all about the lighting!

Come back tomorrow for some Dark Ride fun!

Meet Me at Disneyland Pt. 6: Tomorrowland

Of all the lands, Tomorrowland is the one I spend the least amount of time in. This trip proved to be the exception, as the light crowds permitted a walk-on situation for all the biggies. Despite that, the main reason I removed myself from the norm this trip was to get a few photos of the "Iron Man 3" exhibit at Innoventions, aka the former Carousel of Progress.

People playing video games.

Corporate advertisements.

Infomercials cleverly presented in the form of edu-tainment.

Semi-interesting displays.

And the main reason I came: the Iron Man exhibit, featuring costumes (or replicas?) from the movie.

This one shot made it all worth it. This kid was having a ball. Absolutely priceless.

A few more "Iron Man" shots, so that you don't forget the Marvel-Disney connection.

The Dream Home is still here, but now that it's over five years old, the "thrill" (and I use that term loosely) is definitely gone...or pretty much on the way out.

I didn't bother re-visiting the Dream Home; there were enough people milling inside that it extinguished the tiny bit of desire I might have had to go through once again.

Instead, it was onward and upward to Space Mountain.

Although this is one of my favorite "thrill" rides at Disneyland, I guarantee it wouldn't be half as exciting if the lights were on.

How dare that little girl attempt to cover my face!

Working my way back to the front of Tomorrowland, Star Tours was next on the day's to-do list.

One of the greatest comedy duos since Laurel & Hardy.

The doors open...one group departs, and the next one begins to board.

Time to put the camera away as the journey is about to start...and photos of the 3D screen look like ca-ca anyway.

Final Tomorrowland attraction for the day was Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters.

32?!? Wow...I really need to work on my game.

One closeup of the Astro Orbiter gate, and then I was finished with the Tomorrowland portion of my day.

Tomorrow, we'll meet on Main Street—both of them!
