Disneyland 65th Anniversary at the First Aid Station

Did I make it? I think I just squeaked in on both coasts! Happy 65th Anniversary, Disneyland! Hard to believe the most famous Park in the world has been closed for a number of months, with its future shrouded in uncertainty. The image for today is from January 1968 and shows a family near Central Plaza. Normally, I wouldn’t care about this shot, except for what’s in the background.

It’s not too often that guests would take a shot of the First Aid station at Disneyland…

…unless you’re a completist dork like me. Like the rest of the Park, my how you’ve grown!

Somehow I would imagine that the First Aid station better be prepared for all kinds of stuff when the Park does reopen. I am most curious to see how it will occur; like any other business, if capacity is reduced for health reasons, how will it be able to continue operation and make a profit so that it can sustain itself? Typically a business has two choices: raise prices or cut back on the experience. I’m going to guess Disney will do both.

Trip to Disneyland, May 1972: Pt. 4

Welcome to New Orleans Square! Holding hands in a display of solidarity, 4/5 of our 1970's quintet are ready to enjoy Walt's sanitized recreation of the decadent southern city.

This second shot appears to have been taken from the 2nd floor of the NOS buildings; perhaps they dined at Club 33?

Zooming in to the shop below, you can see the Pirate Arcade/Museum:

Back on solid ground, the lovely young lass poses for the camera…

and attracts the attention of a young gent. I am sure he is thinking, "Ay caramba!"

Today, Fortune Red is placed inside of the entry:

Here's the front of the card you'd receive if you put your change into the machine:

and the reverse side:

Back to 1972, we have a shot of the Rivers of America:

a closeup of the GAF Photo Trail sign:

And a few non-themed buckets parked next to the trash can:

Hope you enjoyed the trip back in time!

All things Tiki

During my interlude until the next series (which will be soon!), I am featuring some Tiki items that I do not believe exist at the park anymore, beginning with this sign for a phone in Adventureland. These are all undated, although I would guess 1960’s. Next up are a series of trashcans; this style in the park is rare, as most are the square-boxy style (which I really like!)

In this October 1965 shot from the Devlin collection (again...MUCH more coming soon!), you can see the top of one of these bullet-shaped cans:

While in Adventureland, thought I'd also post this photo that ought to get Tim salivating a little bit:

March 1956: Fantasyland 2 & Update

Here’s a front façade shot of Mr. Toad, with a closeup of the ticket prices thrown in for good measure. Judging by the crowds (or lack thereof, these photos must be somewhat early in the day.

There are no Casey shots in this bunch, so most likely Outside the Berm is correct about the construction yesterday being on Casey; this sign (and yesterday’s ticket booth shot) are the only photos of dear Casey.

The teacups sit dormant, awaiting a few guests ready to lose their turkey leg or churro in the whirling and spinning of this attraction.

Pulling back just a tad, our photographer catches a trashcan and the Mickey Mouse Club Circus Tent again (even if the MMCC is long gone!):

Dumbo must have been a fave; here are 3 great views of it:

On Friday, my staff had its annual trip to DLand; where else can you see fantastic design, signage, branding, and customer service all in once place? (Don’t even try to answer that one...). I usually try to expand their horizons a little outside of the thrill rides...this time, we took a ride down Main Street on the top of the Omnibus.

Because of the threat of rain, we were able to walk on almost every attraction; even Nemo was a short wait.

This was my third ride on Nemo; I have enjoyed it each time, but still felt that the ride of yesteryear was much better; more kitsch, and less of a storyline crammed into a short ride. For me, Nemo’s video effects fall short (just not quite convincing enough) and the barrage of info thrown out is just too much. However, when my staff was unofficially polled (and they are about 20 years younger than me for the most part), they truly enjoyed it; one even said that he felt that it was a return to the classic rides. I was pleased to at least here that the park is remaining current, even if it goes over my head. There was no debate about lunch; Blue Bayou was and remains a classic (as does the Monte Cristo—an artery clogger second to none).

Just how un-crowded was it? How about no waiting for a photo-opp with Mickey?

Overall, the favorite rides of my staff are the fast-moving thrill rides; nobody does them better (theme-wise) than Disney, and these seem to be the ones that they prefer.

Fantasyland is viewed as a kiddie area and was quickly stepped through. Over at DCA, the Toy Story ride continues to move along; the attraction building definitely gives a nod to the Main Street Train Station.

We all had an awesome day...as if that is any surprise to you. And nothing says awesome like a Corn Dog at Corn Dog King...true happiness.

Tomorrow we will mosey on over to Frontierland. See more vintage Fantasyland photos on my regular website.

Town Square Display Window, Admiral Joe, and Trash Can

I posted this photo a short while ago, and last weekend, took a photo of approximately the same spot in Town Square for comparison’s sake.

My other image for today is of Admiral Joe Fowler standing in Central Plaza near the Castle. Although it’s cool to see a photo of the Disney legend, it’s even cooler to see this rare trash can in the background, which is definitely unthemed. Anybody able to date this slide by the can? I’ll go ahead and repost the other photo of Joe from this same trip, standing near the Chicken of the Sea Restaurant.
