L.A. Trek, Pt. 2
The main reason for the trek to L.A. was to check out Homeboy Industries which was just a few blocks from Union Station. Started by Father Greg 25 years ago, Homeboy Industries serves high-risk, formerly gang-involved men and women by getting them education, counseling programs, tattoo removal, and career training. With a 70% success rate, they are obviously doing something right.
With the slogan "Jobs not Jails," the positive approach gives these men and women hope for a better life. Even the 30% who falter are not thrown out, but rather given more education and counseling.
At the side of the building is the Homegirl Cafe. Lunch there was out of this world.
Best sandwich I'd had in ages; kale, a blend of Mexican cheese, and bacon, between two pieces of bread baked on premises. Yum, yum, and yum.
And if you think you might be intimidated by the staff, don't even give it a second thought. The Homegirl Cafe staff was just as friendly (actually a lot more friendly) than the staff you'd encounter at any other restaurant in town. Father G's training is top notch. If you are interested in finding out more about this worthwhile organization, definitely check out their website.
After lunch, there was a quick detour over to nearby Chinatown.
Not many people hanging out during the day here; it was like the set of an Apocalypse movie. It looks much more magical at night:
Overall, it was a very good (and eye-opening) day. Thanks to Amtrak for a stress-free journey!

Sounds like an awesome program. Glad to see there are opportunities for those who've decided to do something better with their life. 70% success rate is actually pretty high. There are a few programs up in my area, but not as extensive as this.
