Tell-No-Tales Thursdays: Captain’s Bar
Here’s another favorite scene: the Captain’s Bar, shown in an original publicity image from the early days. I always enjoyed the effect of the skeletons drinking and being able to see the booze go down their skeletal frame. Be sure to notice the Marc Davis painting above the bar—a true classic. The redhead in the painting looks like she could be seeing the Peggy Lee song, "Is That All There Is?” This first photo is from October 1995.
And for a little exercise in compare and contrast, check out the Marc Davis painting and how even in the period of one month, it has degraded further with what appears to be and extra streak of bird poop! Or maybe a little tobacco spit?
As an added bonus, here is the warning sign posted at the exit no less...most likely since it also doubles as the handicapped entrance.
See more Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean photos at my website.

Great post, I'm guessing its "a little tobacco spit" just cause it sounds gross & pirate like! I never noticed that sign at the exit, I suppose most folks don't turn around there...
What's going on in that second photo? It looks like maybe they were trying to obstruct most of the redhead's body.
Great photos Dave!
I don’t think the "stain" is actually on the painting. It appears to me to be some sort of cobweb hanging down in front of the painting - it moves from right to left because of the slightly different perspectives of the two photos...
Cheers!
Kevin
I've always wondered if that is an actual painting? Maybe it used to be (like the stretch portraits in the Haunted Mansion) and it has been switched out with an inkjet print.
I had heard that for many years it was Marc's original in there - but was replaced with a copy some years back...
Egads! Marc's original painting was in there? Never heard that. Wow.
Love the comparisons. Thanks, Dave!
