Here are 8 undated photos of the area behind the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship restaurant; I really do miss this lush, semi-hidden oasis. In the background you can just make out the patchwork quilt of Storybook Land.
See more vintage Disneyland Chicken of the Sea photos at my main website.
Maggie: The Restaurant/Ship went in first for opening; the Skull Rock Cove area and expanded water around the ship was added in 1960. You can see a construciton photo here: http://davelandweb.com/disneyland/11_60_N13.jpg These photos just don't show Skull Rock; it is there though, off to the right.
These are sure unique! I wonder why someone to take so many shots of this area? I only see two people in one of the shots (CM’s?) Was the park closed when these were taken? GREAT detail of this often forgotten area. What year would you guess these to be? THANKS FOR THESE TREATS DAVE!
Love these shots Dave. They are so clean and clear. The last pic shows my favorite place (on the bench against the rocks) to have lunch. I can smell the steamed tuna on a bun now. Notice how the shadows seem to be stretching to the West, so I would say it was early morning before the park opened. About the guys in pic# 4:The CM on the right is waring a P-Coat and deck shoes (my guess; Chick-o-the-Sea guy), and the older man on the left is dressed in the usual "sweeper/maint" duds. Both seem to be placing a table in just the right spot. My feeling is these photos are by the Disneyland records/history people. The park before opening is a magic time, even today.
pic #4 also shows a worker walking the tracks of Casey Jr. in the upper left. It really shows how astonishingly large Sleeping Beauty Castle really is!
this is an outstanding series. thanks.
ReplyDeletewhen/where did skull rock go in? i have always assumed they went in together.(?)
