Oct. 2, 1956: 20K Walk Through

In a creative attempt to stretch the Tomorrowland budget, Walt had a walk through exhibit created that showed off the sets of the classic “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” This Genuine Faux-D© shot of Nemo’s pipe organ is from October 1956; it was eventually adapted and recycled into the Haunted Mansion ballroom, as you can see in this Panavue shot. Sustainability at its best!

  3. A TIME MACHINE! That's how he does it! There's no other reasonable explanation.

Hi Dave! I've been a fan of your blog for years. Thanks for all of the great images and research. I know I'm coming to this particular post over a decade late, but this 1956 organ photo has me perplexed by something extremely miniscule: do you know anything about why this image of the organ includes 2 black keys at each end of the keyboards? In all the other photos I see of the organ on the movie set, at the Disneyland 20k exhibit, and at the Haunted Mansion, it has 2 black keys on the left end of the keyboards, and 3 black keys on the right side, leading to a more typical layout. Is it possible that this picture is somehow mirrored near its center?

Oh, Dave, I'm sorry, I realized I made a mistake in the comment above. It's not the 1956 photo from this posting, its actually a different photo from a similar angle that has the pair of black keys at each end of the keyboards. It's the 13th photo on the Daveland 20K Exhibit Walkthrough photo page: http://davelandweb.com/tomorrowland/20k.html

Dave, I'm so sorry again, the picture mentioned in the above comment also seems to be the wrong one. It's very strange, but I can only seem to find the right photo through a Google image search. It has the Daveland.com stamp on it, but I can't seem to find it on your actual site anymore. It's the same 20k walkthrough picture at the very end of the Long Forgotten blog piece about the organ: https://longforgottenhauntedmansion.blogspot.com/2010/06/mansion-gets-organized.html

  9. Anonymous - Here's my question - why all the effort for this one shot? You already seem to know the answer anyway.

Hi Dave! I'd say it comes down to my Disney geekiness mixed with strange "the picture you are looking for no longer exists at this link" messages that threw me off of where I had actually first found the picture in question. Mirroring of the image does seem likely, but the pattern in the wood below the keyboard doesn't look mirrored, so I don't know. Wasn't sure if mirroring was something you came across much in your years of posting such beautiful pictures. Consider my appreciation of all your work undiminished if you do not know the answer :)
