We Interupt This Series...

With today being Halloween, I had to do something related to the Haunted Mansion. So...here are a few from my Haunted Mansion page. I am including some of the favorite icons of the ride, including the elevator gargoyle, the Cemetery Caretaker & his dog, and the Hitchhiking Ghosts.

A Day at Disneyland, September 1964 (pt. 1)

I always enjoy finding a box of slides that document an entire day at Disneyland; seeing what people choose to ride, and also seeing what they choose to photograph and how they compose it. This box from September, 1964 is pretty good, so I am going to include the best ones in chronological order. The first two are from the long-gone Flower Mart on Main Street. Apparently, you could buy fake flowers in this little alley. Sounds bizarre, but I guess they did pretty well for almost twenty years.





Picture three appears to be of an artist on Main Street at the Art Festival, sketching the family’s little blond haired daughter. This is probably my favorite slide of the bunch. Stay tuned for more pics tomorrow!

Balloons, Balloons, Balloons, July 1965

Back from a few days at DLand and thought I’d start off with a beautiful (albeit non-rare) shot of a cast member with balloons entering the Town Square area. My second shot is from February, 1965 of two guests hanging with a rabbit from Alice.





My last shot is one that asks for help again—is this underwater at the Submarine Lagoon? It’s from February, 1965, and the surrounding slides are from DLand, so I would guess it’s not one from another park. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Mineral Hall, February 1965

Calm down Tangaroa - it's just an exterior shot. However, it’s still a nice view of Rainbow Ridge. I am also including a nice overall shot of Rainbow Ridge from a year before.





My odd shot of the day shows 6 Tyrolean musicians who got lost from the Matterhorn and ended up at the America the Beautiful show, circa February 1965. I am taking the weekend off, so in the meantime, check out one of the new Disney Blogs, Passport to Dreams.

September, 1963 Mixed Bag

The pink furry concoction on this woman’s head is downright scary; it’s downright difficult to look past it and notice the signage for the Golden Horseshoe. Moving along...the Yellow Monorail takes us through Tomorrowland, including a nice scene of the Submarine.





The 4th shot is a nice view of the Parking Lot (just for you, Jordan), and the 5th and final (yes, that’s 5 today, you greedy so-and-so's) pic for today is of the DLand Hotel.

For Amazon Belle

This first shot (from Dec. 1960) is for Amazon Belle, who liked the horse-drawn trolley pic from yesterday’s post. This one also shows the Hills Brothers House on the right. My 2nd one (July, 1963) is for Tangaroa: a nice signage shot for the Tiki Room, with Uti visible on the left. Hey, you idiots taking the pictures! Get the helloutamyway!



My 3rd shot is of the Old Mill from April, 1960, with a little canoe paddling going on at right of the photo.



For those of you still awake enough to see a fourth pic (don't get used to it!), I have a shot of the Mine Train going through the tunnel with pack mules overhead (Sept. 1963). Before I sign off, I just want to give a little shout out to the people that I have met through this blog, especially Tangaroa, Matterhorn, the Major, Amazon Belle, and Jordan (and yes, there are many others). They can always be counted on to leave great comments and answer all of my ignorant questions when they could really be saying "you dumbass why don't you know this stuff yourself?!?" So, thanks to this great collaborative group and here's to many future posts.

Front Gate, September 1959

Today is another mixed bag; a cute older couple at the front gate, with the freight car train in the background. When was the last time you saw lines this short?!? The second shot is somewhat interesting as it is obviously taken from the train, and the landscaping is still looking pretty undeveloped.



The last shot for today is one from Main Street with the Horse-drawn trolley. Yes, all are from the same batch; the slides are stamped September, but I am guessing from the bunting, the actual trip was in July.

Main Street INA Corner Shop, November 1960

Here’s a look at the INA Carefree Corner (and the Red Wagon Inn), which today, is the Kodak Photo Corner. It would also appear that a tour guide is standing on the corner as well. And, to answer yesterday’s “anonymous” question, not only did the photo have a goat, but a cuddly little sheep as well. Here’s the detail shot:

Big Thunder Falls/Cascade Peak, November 1960

The other day, I showed a pic of Big Thunder Falls, which lost its Thunder in 1998 at the hands of a bulldozer. My second shot for today (gotta' keep the Major out of trouble at all costs) shows the Seawolf Submarine, which hopefully is one of the subs being “recycled” for the upcoming Nemo ride. I full support sustainability! This one is also from November, 1960.

Skyway Images, Summer 1960

Please back off the Major...here are two photos today, both showing the long-gone (RIP 1956—1994) Skyway. The first shot shows the Fantasyland Alpine-themed station, and the second shows the buckets passing through the holes in the Matterhorn. And yes, the holes have been filled in.

Bertha Mae, September 1959

I am listening to the Major today and doing only one photo. This beautiful crystal clear shot shows the Keelboat Bertha Mae, on its way to Jack Sparrow Island....oops, I mean Tom Sawyer’s Island.

Astro Jets, July 1960

Today’s first photo provides a double bonus: a shot of the defunct Astro Jets (RIP, 1966) AND Jordan’s buddy Pugsly Addams. I am assuming today’s Astro Orbiter is supposed to replace this former attraction, however, it doesn’t begin to touch this way cool retro design.



For those who are not into Tomorrowland, I have dipped into the Rainbow Ridge files again for this Pack Mule shot, also from July 1960. Jordan—if you look closely, you will see Pugsley straddled precariously atop a mule; give that animal an extra carrot!

Back to Rainbow Mountain, September 1959

The photos of the Rainbow Mountain Train seemed to go over well, so I have included 2 more from the same batch of slides. The shots aren’t quite as great, but they still show some cool things you may not normally see.



And for all of you who don’t give a rat’s ass about Rainbow Mountain/Ridge, here’s one for you, also from September 1959: the Motor Boat Cruise, which survived until 1993.

Indian Village, 1950’s

These two photos are of the long extinct Indian Village. Now, the only Indians left at DLand are the AA’s along the Rivers of America. There’s something very Stepford about that. Anyway...these 2 shots are from a performance at the Ceremonial Dance Circle.

Golden Horseshoe Station Wagon

Sometimes it pays to go back and look closer at slides that you’ve passed over before. This July, 18, 1955 slide looks like your normal everyday Mark Twain shot, but when you zoom in on the right, you see something somewhat jarring at Disneyland: a car. To the right of the Golden Horseshoe is this yellow station wagon, with the trunk open, as if it was being unloaded.



Slide #2 is from August, 1956. I have a plethora of these Indian Village slides, but haven’t posted many yet. If there’s much interest in them, let me know and they’ll start seeing the light of day.

Mixed Bag Friday the 13th

This undated slide is obviously at the end of the roll, but still gives an interesting look at the Marching Band, entering Adventureland.



Slide #2, from April 1968, appears to be either a backlot or parking lot photo with a number of cast members in different uniforms. My last two shots from March, 1967 and April, 1968 and show Big Thunder Falls on the Nature’s Wonderland Railroad ride (thanks Bearride and Matterhorn!).

Autopia Eagle

I’m back, and starting off with a shot of the Autopia Eagle, back when it was sponsored by Richfield. This one is from September, 1966.



The 2nd photo from 1960 shows the now defunct Livery Stable vehicle. I truly enjoy the variety of transportation on Main Street that takes you from one end to the other (internet buzz for DCA is that they are going to transform the entrance to be more like Main Street with various vehicles to whisk guests away to each section. Sounds cool to me). Here’s the same family getting ready to board the train at the Main Street Train Station:
