Does this area of Disneyland look unfamiliar? It’s a shot from Frontierland over the Rivers of America facing the area that is now New Orleans Square. The Building you see is the Chicken Plantation Restaurant, which closed in 1962. Lots to see in this photo: sailors gazing over the water, pickup trucks parked near the banks of the River, plenty of brightly colored umbrellas to shade diners from the July heat, and what appears to be unsightly power lines.

Wow Dave- great image of the Chicken Plantation restaurant. The restaurant ranks right up there with Mineral Hall as a place that was not photographed. I love the umbrellas on the lower left hand side of the image.
ReplyDeleteAt look at all the maintenance trucks in plain view! Walt would have had a cow...
ReplyDeleteThere sure are a lot of people on the walkways to the left. I assume that those power lines are left over from the television show from the day before? Or they might have been necessary for further construction.
ReplyDeletethe restaurant was called the Swift Chicken Plantation.
ReplyDeleteYes Anonymous - to be exactly correct, it is called the Swift Chicken Plantation, however most park guests simple called it the Chicken Plantation. The sponsor was Swift meats, who also sponsored the Market House on Main Street and the Red Wagon Inn. I am guessing you count rivets for a living.
ReplyDeleteOne mo' time; just discovered that both of us are wrong; the actual name of the restaurant is "The Plantation House," viewable in an ad in the Vacationland magazine. Read it and weep; never pays to be brazen and snarky! http://bp0.blogger.com/_3jV5FcVqpE8/R_wqyeNlHtI/AAAAAAAABIQ/rEOAcn13whI/s1600-h/Vacationland+Summer++1960_9.jpg
ReplyDeleteI was going to say that all those people on the far walkway might be going/coming from Holidayland, which I believe connected back that way, but I remembered that it didn't open until 1957. Anyway, great pic.
