Hump Day at the Gardens

Shot #1 for today hails from July 1956. What’s going on behind those construction walls? On the right we see the Sleeping Beauty Castle, which identifies the scene going on behind the Red Horseless Carriage as the soon-to-be-open Plaza Gardens, sponsored by Carnation.

Opened on August 8, 1956, the undated image below shows patrons enjoying a little shade and some nice wholesome Carnation snacks.

Since the Carnation company began in 1899, the 60th circle would most likely date this shot to 1959 (1899 + 60 = 1959; ain’t math grand?). I am digging the variety of hats.

Here’s another view of the Gardens from the 1960s:

By March 2013, the relaxing Gardens (also the beloved location of swing dancing) had been replaced by Fantasy Faire, thus blurring the lines between Fantasyland and Main Street.

Have you hear about the snow white remake? We have to save it and the other ones.

  2. I've heard of it - and seen it. Why save a piece of poo?

  3. Again, great shots but sometimes I miss the foreground for the background. The story here is the evolution of Plaza Gardens, but what I'm getting out of is are those hats, and what's on the table. We were so happy back then, and easy to please. The ketchup (catsup?) and mustard containers were adequate. The paper cups with a logo did the job. There wasn't a need for "improvement". Today the popcorn buckets are a permanent sculpture that chubby, middle-aged children fight over in the park, only to take them home and sell online. Off topic, but I'm going to Knotts next Monday for the express purpose of avoiding DL issues and finding a shred of what THIS used to be. ( No Boysenberry festival on Mon-Thur so the "popcorn-bucket fighting" people should be absent. ) Their ghost town is still made out of wood, not plastic painted with a wood texture,... Kim Irvine. You know what you did.

I know some don't like the film. But, the box office has gone low and we must help disney to make it right.

  5. Anonymous?... Is this Rachel Zegler? Stop. Please. No one's listening to you anymore. If you want Disney to "put things right" then stop going to Disney. Stop giving them your business. They need to bottom out to figure out what went wrong and rebuild, fire Bob Iger, fire Kathleen Kennedy, etc.

    1. Exactly-! Sometimes you have to "Kill the Beast in order to Save the Beast". Disney [may] be too far gone however, but...

  6. Fifthrider, I've found something crazier [to spend your money on] than the current popcorn buckets....see HERE!

I love all those fun hats, too!

    Thanks, Dave.

    1. Popcorn bucket ornaments?!... You win. I thought plastic magnets shaped like Disney food was bad but you win.

  7. Great shots of the Carnation Plaza Gardens. We can also see the huge mound of dirt indicating construction for the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train.
