Last (for now) vintage Disneyland Town Square

Hopefully you can all take one more (for now) vintage post on Disneyland's Town Square. Dating back to the first summer at the Park (1955 to all you newbies out there), this shot shows a stylish lady in plaid with City Hall and a popcorn vendor behind her. That box below the cart does not make a pretty display!

It seems so funny to see the young and scrawny trees that barely cover the berm.

View number two shows the peak of the Matterhorn in the background and the information/souvenir booth in the foreground.

25¢ for a Guide Book. Is there ANYTHING at the Park today for that price? What a great assortment of souvenirs here!

Meanwhile Vesey Walker and the boys march through Town Square.

Last shot for today is a blurry view of a Horseless Carriage zipping by from Spring 1957.

  1. First, I'm blown away to see a stroller in the background and it's the normal size of a stroller. For that matter, no children are in it. One is being carried and the other is (gasp) walking on his own! Compare to year 2016 where multi-stroller SUV's contain 7-year old and bags of merchandise.

For one dollar, Shrunken Ned will dispense a card that tells you long ago you could buy something in the park for a quarter. ...maybe. I'm making that one up.

  2. Love the shot of the souvenirs! The guidebooks are 1960 examples, if anybody cares.

  3. Your Matterhorn pic shows (gasp!) a woman wearing...dare I say it?...PANTS! How un-dapper of her! Whats this world coming to? Next thing, park goers will be wearing baggy shorts, tank tops and sneakers and ignoring it all while fooling with their phones!

There is such a 'simplicity' in the atmosphere of these shots. One can almost feel they have been transported back to an era that wasn't that far gone in the '50s. Quite the contrast today. KS

  5. Lets see what I can spend my money on: An aluminum tray etched with Sleeping Beauty Castle, have no idea what on the end of those sticks, the Guide Books, Keppy Kaps, full size park map, and my favorite, both the paper and PLASTIC version of sun hats (be still my heart)in fashionable blue or pink. And last, but not least, on the left behind the stand is the revolving rack of postcards! So much goodness in this photo! Thanks for posting!

  6. I'm always gratified at the preponderance of adults in these vintage photos.

  7. ...and that's why the committee took away my time machine: All I did was plop down a ten dollar bill and say, "Fine. Give me all forty of those guide books." Sheesh. They're so strict....

  8. I think, PWover50, those sticks are "Magic Pencils" with the four-colored leads and the character erasers on top. But that's just a guess...
