Lost at Disneyland

From the same 1957/1958 batch that gave us yesterday's Spaceman comes this shot of a shirtless little boy at the First Aid Station located near Central Plaza. Was he lost? Was he sick? Did he need to change clothes? Not sure, but he looks pretty happy to me!

This shot baffles me. I know it's in Tomorrowland, because it shows the Moonliner, but it seems like an odd place that would have guest access. Disneyland Geeks…any idea?

Zooming in you can also see the Wen-Mac flag that flew over the Flight Circle.

More vintage and current Disneyland photos at my main website.

  1. I searched for and found an aerial shot of TL in 1965 and used the visual clues to place the photographer. The building on the right is the side of the circlevision theater, the weaved wall on the left is a backdrop for the Space Bar seating area. This area isn't backstage but a path. To the photographers back is the Matterhorn.

TL67 modified this building so this flat wall doesn't exist anymore. The Peoplemover track would be over your head here.

  2. It would appear that over time, the trees to the left of the weaved wall in your '57/'58 photo eventually grew to at least partially shade this walkway:

  3. @MRaymond, Did you mean the "Yacht Bar" seating area instead of the "Space Bar"? It's the Yacht Bar that was next to the Circle-Vision theater building. The original Space Bar was located between the "Skyway to Fantasyland" and "Rocket to the Moon" attractions.

Dave, these are fantastic shots. I've never seen this view or angle before. It's always a thrill to discover something new about Disneyland's past. Thanks!

  4. @K.Martinez I guess Yacht Bar is more accurate. My first memory of TL is when I was 6 years old at the opening of TL67.

    DL history is always fascinating.

  5. This would probably place it about '58 while the subs ( on the left ) and Matterhorn (right) were under construction. Perhaps a passageway between the two during that time? Based on the sun & shade, I'd even peg this as 4pm.

I love this kind of analysis. Crowdsourced Disney nerdism...

Thank you, Dave and friends, very cool stuff.

  9. Two really great shots, Dave. Thank goodness that someone long ago was willing to 'waste' a shot or two like this!

  11. The 1965 photo solves the question of where the photo was taken. You can see the trees, back of the Yacht Bar, and CircleVision, as well as a partial view of the Flight Circle when 'looking' towards the TWA rocket.

Great shot Dave (and I love the Telephone Booth too)!

And Chuck, you nailed it. DL Nerd of the Week Award to you.

  12. I have to pass the award to MRaymond - he's the one who figured out where it was. I only posted the photos. But it was still fun!

  13. It looks also like the walk around the flying saucer attraction.
