Chaplin on Formosa

While out shooting photos on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, I stumbled upon this very cute historic quartet of tudor cottages.

Reading the for sale sign, I noticed that these 1923 Storybook Bungalows claimed silent movie comedian Charlie Chaplin as the builder.

Some online articles claim the connection is dubious, but it's not surprising since Chaplin's Tudor-style movie studio still remains nearby (currently the home to the Muppets).

Is it all true? Who knows. I do know that at night they certainly look magical.

Hoping to get a better gander at this piece of history in the near future. Anyone have a spare $2.5 million?

More Hollywood photos (vintage and contemporary) on my main website.

  1. Oh, wow! These cottages are simply gorgeous, as is the photo.

I found a website showing the interior of one of the bungalows and a teeny bit of its claimed history: http://www.lasplash.com/publish/cat_index_Entertainment_and_Culture/Historic_Charlie_Chaplin_Whimsical_Hansel_Gretel_Cottage_rarely_available_Now.php

Now this is cool. 2.5M doesn't sound too steep, considering the neighborhood.

  4. A very cute little complex - I worked close by there at A&M Records - over my 20+ years there, several folks who worked with us at A&M lived there and I had the opportunity to visit 3 of the cottages. A nice little retreat in the middle of the city. I preferred the beach however, and never opted to look at one of these spots to call home.
