Meet Me At Disneyland, Pt. 4: Pirates of the Caribbean
Leaving Fantasyland, I took the back path towards Frontierland, where I was able to get a few glimpses at the Big Thunder Mountain Construction project.
There was also a sign showing Walt's fondness for animals, specifically horses. These little historic signs are a nice touch to the park, which give background and meaning to Disneyland, elevating it beyond a mere theme park.
The design of this snack cart baffles me; it's not quite Frontierland, and it's not quite New Orleans Square. It seems more akin to a circus tent.
Unfortunately, I just missed making the Mark Twain's next journey.
Instead, I boarded one of the boats to venture deep into the heart of the Bayou at the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.
The Jolly Roger gives a warning that none of the guests paid heed to.
Ever noticed this "Stow Yer Weapons" sign?
Wouldn't it be great if you could get out of the boat for a bit and join the pirates in this scene for a drink or two?
A skeletal bird guards the harpsichord in the Captain's Quarters:
I am sure that many a young guest has attempted to steal from the Pirate's glittering treasure featured in this tableau:
The Wicked Wench:
I had secretly hoped that Blackbeard would reappear here one day, especially when his character was utilized in the most recent movie.
Poor Carlos; probably wishing he'd taken that swimming class at the YMCA when he had the chance.
The classic auction scene; always a favorite!
Which one would you choose?
Ever noticed the painting in the background here?
A closer look for the curious:
It would almost appear that these two are making eye contact, but of course, that can't be.
The trio of minstrels that welcome you into the next scene, accompanied by a donkey and a dog.
The hat thief, precariously balancing his loot:
I'll be he'd be fun to hang out with in the Captain's Bar.
Another jolly character who bears the indelible stamp of animator Marc Davis.
And last (and in my opinion least), Jack Sparrow's treasure room:
See you tomorrow at the Haunted Mansion!

I wonder what they were trying to imitate with that snack cart? A portside dock market stand? Kind of like a shipment came in and someone is selling produce and goods directly off the ship? It looks more like an upscale flea market stand to me.
ReplyDeleteYou did a beautiful job on the PotC pics.
I wish WDW hadnt cheaped out with their Pirates. I first experienced the attraction at Disneyland as a kid, and was blown away. Many years later I tried out the WDW version and knew something was missing. It was later that I found out it was almost half of the stinkin' ride!
ReplyDeleteFrom 'steering' in the wheelhouse (Dave, you need to ask to get up there)to sitting in the tower operating PoC, I was so fortunate to experience it all. Great pics...feel like I was there. KS
ReplyDeleteKS - I've been up there a few times. The views sure are great! Glad you all liked the photos!
ReplyDeleteWOW, that outdoor vendor cart is the worst. Huge and tacky. Yeesh.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of Pirates though!
