House of the Future model
This is a model of a house of the future. One is being built in Disneyland. It is a plastic house with glass walls equal in area to the floor area.
So said the caption from this April 17, 1957 publicity photo, attempting to drum up interest in this Disneyland attraction.
Opening a few months later on June 12, 1957, this plastic monstrosity has gained an almost cult-like following in the last 55 years.
Here's an early shot of a family just exiting, after having seen all the domestic wonders of the future. The gent on the right looks positively bored stiff.
This Spring 1959 view of the Monsanto House of the Future would be unremarkable, except for the fact that it happens to show the construction of its new neighbor, the Matterhorn:

I've always wished that Disney would sell a detailed model of the HOF, maybe one in which you could lift the top half off to see the wonders within!
ReplyDeleteI remember going through HOF with my mother always holding my hand firmly. I think she was afraid I was going to break something. I also remember the windows and curtains and the outdoor patio area. Otherwise much of it's faded memories.
ReplyDeleteDave, as always your Black and White phots are awesome!
Funny, I was talking to an architect recently, and he commented on my screen backdrops (slide show of DaveLand and GDB), and a HOF shot came up.
ReplyDeleteHe cited it as one of his childhood inspirations to go into architecture as a profession. Wonder if anyone will say that about Luigi's Tires in 50 years?
JG
Hey Anonymous, those tires might inspire someone to create the car of the future, LOL!
ReplyDeleteLoved these pics. I almost fell out of my chair because I saw a woman that looked like my mom but none of the people she was with looked like relatives. Also, in that second pic with the crowd...notice the Marilyn Monroe wanna be??
