For those of you who appreciate the attention to detail that Imagineers lavished on the recently recreated Carthay Circle Restaurant at DCA, here's a 1947 look at the original inspiration.
"Unconquered," starring Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard, was the movie featured on the marquee in this vintage image.
Naturally, Disney left out this detail. No need to advertise a rival film studio!

Of all the new things I saw at California Adventure last week, the Carthay Circle Theatre and Buena Vista Street impressed me the most!
ReplyDeleteI forgot about good ol' Cecil B. Demille's Unconquered. His films are unintentionally funny when viewed today, but still very entertaining.
The Carthay Circle Theatre opened in 1926. Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” had its world premiere at the Carthay Circle Theatre on December 21, 1937. It was the site of innumerable premieres and was one of the jewels of the Fox Theatres empire.
ReplyDeleteIt was at the Carthay Circle Theatre where Mike Todd showcased “Around the World in 80 Days” in 1956. Unfortunately some of the interior of the auditorium was destroyed to accommodate the huge new Todd A-O screen.
The final film to play the Carthay Circle Theatre was “The Shoes of the Fisherman” starring Anthony Quinn. It was demolished in 1969 and replaced by an office block.
I agree about the campy nature of DeMille's work; but like you said, still tons of fun!
ReplyDeleteicrib - thanks for the additional info!
Great post! Speaking of Fox Theaters...the one here in Riverside has been restored and looks gorgeous!
