Disneyland, October 1972, Pt. 3

After you recover from the jiggle of the first photo (the guest must have had the shakes after sitting through small world), you might need another aspirin for the teacups.

Something about this grown woman in her Fantasyland costume that seems a little unsettling; almost looks like she lost her way to the set of a bad 70s porno.

Climb aboard your Skyway bucket and let's soar over the park, shall we?

I am going to toot my own horn on this one, as I believe this is one of the best Skull Rock photos I have in my collection. It's almost like you could reach out of the Skyway bucket and touch it!

I think I actually hear the water cascading over the rocks!

Something about the cool blue color of the Monorail that I really love (note how nicely it coordinates with the blue PeopleMover?).

To ride in the bubble must have been a thrill—I say bring it back! You can never have enough bubbles.

The Submarine Voyage attraction is undergoing a little maintenance, as the lagoon is drained and all of the coral is exposed for guests to see. You can catch a glimpse of the PeopleMover in the upper right-hand corner of the photo.

  2. Those are exceptional. Always fun seeing a Gray next to dry coral. During my many trips to the park, this was a sight I never saw in person. Monorail Blue is looking mighty sparkly as well. Yup, I agree, never enough bubble. Connie is correct, wouldn't it be fun to jump into the upper pool on Skull Rock. I remember as a kid, always looking for that magic tunnel or trail that would take one to the top of the rock.

  3. Wow, I know we've seen pics of the Alice In Wonderland attraction hostesses dressed as Alice, but I don't remember ever seeing a hostess for the Mad Tea Party dressed that way. I wonder when they stopped doing this?

  6. Yes, excellent photos. Remember how exotic and eery Skull Rock was at night?

  8. Loving these great helpings of '72 pics here, Dave!

Toot away, you're right. Great Skull Rock pic. Look at all the amount of plantings (who tends the bushes on top? How?) and I never noticed the extra waterfall on our right! It's just such a super cool idea for a spot and perfectly executed to be wonderful but not too overpowering or cheesy. It was "just right."

Detail: unlike other areas where they blend in, that trash can stands there and screams!

Tan and Tan and Young and Lovely, the Girl from 70s pornoland stands a-waitin'... lol that dress is so not cut right for her. We must remember it's '72.

I remember riding on the Monorail under a "bubble" it was a neat perspective and you felt the sense of gliding along on a beam more.

Like those big mother clams on the sub dock.

You know I don't think I really appreciated how great Tomorrowland was then. But it was wonderful being there.

  9. I've talked/heard from a few people (Monorail CMs and Imagineers) about why the bubble with the operator in it was removed from the top of the Monorail and it all seems to come back to the boy that was hit and killed on that one Grad Night. After that, the bubble was left out of the design out of necessity and the driver was moved to the front cockpit. I wish I had a better and happier reason for its removal but I'm sorry to say, that's why it's gone.
