April 1977, Pt. 6

Welcome to Fantasyland, circa April 1977. For the first shot, all I can do is scratch my head. Whatever this train thing is supposed to be, it sure does look cheap and out of place at Disneyland. I'll just chalk it up to the polyester decade.

The Tinkerbell Toy Shop seems to have Pooh fever!

Let's peep into those windows, shall we?

And the shop itself:

This Skyway shot of Skull Rock is real gem; I still think this was some of the best faux rock work that I have ever seen at the resort:

Casey Jr. will help us exit today's post.

  1. "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" came out in 1977. It was the last time Sterling Holloway did the voice for Pooh.

What the heck IS that train doing in Tomorrowland?

  2. That train was an ODV cart. The train cars had freezer cases in them that held ice cream sandwiches, juice bars, etc. It was located alongside the Motor Boat Cruise in the Small World Mall area (the old Small World souvenir stand was located just to the left of it). You can see the Motor Boat dock just beyond the train. I want to say that it was around until the area was redone for Light Magic, but not entirely sure. I know it was painted in more subdued colors in later years.

  3. I wonder if that train picture is "out of time" in your shots.

The shade cover overhead is one of the original tomorrowland type, used there and at DL Hotel and discontinued with the 1967 make-over (although some might have survived as provisional use).

Could this photo be a survival of the '60's instead? The train has a 2D "flat" look similar to the old Fantasyland of that time.

Speaking of fake rockwork, the walls behind Casey are very high quality and almost unique in the park. Rubble stone, ashlar, and the native bedrock all look distinctive and realistic here in Storybookland.

Some of the Matterhorn bridges have a similar ashlar and rubble design also, not sure if by the same hand. Some of these were removed in recent past, (I think for seismic improvements of the underlying structure) and replaced with more mundane stone.

  4. JG - Unless that slide sat in the camera for over 10 years...it's date stamped with the others and part of the same batch.

  5. Dave, I figured you would have checked that, LOL.

After seeing TM's post, which appeared while I was typing mine, I remember seeing this cart. The context was confusing. It's in that weird zone that is neither Fantasyland or Tomorrowland.

Looks like they are re-using some of the older shades.

  7. Dave, looking back at that second pic, I just now realized that they got rid of the wood carving of Nana's head on the facade of Tinkerbell's Toy Shop (far right). It must have happened during the 1983 Fantasyland redo. Close-ups of the other three heads (Capt. Hook, Mr. Smee and the Crocodile) can be seen here: Tinker Bell Toy Shop

  8. Good catch on that Chris - I wonder what happened to Nana?

  9. She was probably tossed into the trash can. I guess there is a chance that somebody saved her like they saved the witch's head from the Snow White dark ride mural.
