December 1969
How about a little Christmas in July? Looks like the Disneyland Christmas tree is being readied 'back stage,' before it gets moved to Town Square.
Town Square is rarely this peaceful these days, and seeing this shot makes me long for a time when it would be possible to just sit and relax here without the craziness of thousands of guests passing through. I keep telling myself that without those guests, there'd be no Disneyland!
The cannon is still in Town Square, albeit on a raised platform:
Here's the maker's mark on it:
This one shot is going to provide a lot of details for us to examine!
If you want to take a tour by these lovely young lasses, you'll need to wait by this sign (Signage Geek alert!). The font used on the sign looks more 70's than vintage Main Street.
I can't decide which is cooler; that boy's hat or the rack of mint postcards on display!
Last of the zooms features the three lovely lasses themselves; I believe the blonde is being excluded by the two brunettes. Poor blondie!
Carole Lombard is playing at the Main Street Cinema. She is best known for her 1930's/1940's comedies (and being the wife of Clark Gable), but yes, she did start off in silent films.
Here's a gorgeous shot of Carole from 1934:
This little detail seems somewhat odd; these guys don't look like repairmen, so why would they be trying to break-in through the window?
I'll leave you hanging with that one!
See more vintage and contemporary Disneyland Main Street U.S.A. photos at my main website.
Two of some of my all time favorite experiences from Town Square on Main Street USA. The very much missed (by me) of the Coffee Gardens in its Hills Brothers configuration. There was a long time habit by me of entering the park as early as possible, have a cup of coffee right there and watch as the smiles and looks of excitement parade by. Then a dash into that very Mad Hatter for some personal mobile face shade; then down the street.
ReplyDeleteOn the other side of the square is one of those connections to Walt. The Guided Tour (and that really cool waiting area.) It was always just one of those things, staffed by amazing women who added much to the experience known as Disneyland.
Ooh, great short of Guided Tours Garden! It's a shame AAA ever moved in.
ReplyDeleteMidday Friday the Park was busy in terms of the lines but the walkways were amazingly clear. Town Square was almost this peaceful.
These are AMAZING!!!! So many things running through my head. I apologize for the length of this post!
ReplyDeleteHow odd that they had the Christmas tree where guests could see it. Now days, they do it behind the Carnation Cafe. Ah wait...back then it was a REAL tree, wasn't it?
The guided tour "garden". I used to love sitting there. I also liked the fact that there was a tiny restroom back there in the left corner that very few people knew about, LOL.
Those guys at the window: I'll bet they are "supervising" the window set installation! Now that's done at night, darn it!
Great pics, Dave!!
I love that Disneyland bag that the lady has, while enjoying her quiet bench on Main Street.
ReplyDeleteI love that bag too. I didn't know they made the plastic handled version in that wild print....now I want one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the close-up shots, Dave! The first two rows of postcards on that stand appear to be "squeakers." The remaining rows are all postcard booklets. If we could just step into that pic with some vintage money......
Oh, and the backstage Christmas tree shot is fantastic!
I may have been working the Hills' kitchen that morning putting together breakfasts for folks like Thufer.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes,Connie, back then it WAS a real tree. Well, sort of. It consisted of real tree parts, the branches of which were from more than 1 tree, assembled to make a perfectly formed Christmas Tree suitable for display.
