Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Adventureland, Pt. 1

This is the last “Land” featured in the Encyclopaedia Britannica Series. Adventureland really had only one attraction in the first few years of the park, but somehow, the ol’ EB managed to wring out an entire filmstrip on it anyway. Still, this is one of my fave strips as the views of shops long gone are extremely rare.

Here Bobby and Susie can be seen entering the gates of Adventureland; note there is no Tiki Room or Dole Whip stand on the left—how horrific!

Susie is totally creeped out by the skulls:

As you can see here, Adventureland was more of an outdoor shopping mall:

  1. I love early Adventureland photos. They really show how the area has matured: Though constant experimentation by the landscaping division, the jungle now has far more believable tropical plantings in a wider variety than before.

Also notice how many of the store front facades were modified over the years, again for the better (Slides 4 and 5)

This is also one of the best shots I've seen of the old back-to-back Gay 90s-Polynesian building. When the new Tiki Room wing was installed, these mixed message sightlines were greatly reduced.
