You Are There: Disneyland December 1961, Pt. 1
It’s another bright and colorful “you are there” (anybody remember that show?) showcase of Disneyland History, circa December 1961. Leaving the Disneyland Hotel, our family heads towards the entrance, which looks almost as crowded as the park would be today! I always get anxious at the entrance when I see the train parked at the station: “Let me in already!” That Guided Tour price looks like a steal!
How about those inviting wooden chairs on the porch of the City Hall in Town Square?
Zooming in for a detailed view of the Horseless Carriage sign and the schedule of events at the park:
Plenty of locker space at the Bekins Storage facility, ready to hold all of your souvenir goodies!
See more Disneyland photos at my regular website.
I've mentioned this before, but I always like the old Bekin's Storage building with the blank brick front and the dutch gable end. It made for a nice contrast from the rest of main street which is, naturally, heavy with glass display windows.
ReplyDeleteThe loss of the Bekins building is particularly hard because the faux-Victorian buildings that replaced it are not the equals of the original 1950's vintage store fronts.
All great, but the City Hall photo is awesome! At first I thought it was one of your contemporary photos!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katella about the loss of Bekins. At least they could have left the facade the same.
Have to agree, the Bekins building was the lone representation on Main Street of a turn of the century warehouse/industrial area. Would be nice to see it return.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, Dave.
I agree with you all; the façade that replaced The Bekins Shop looks fairly fake...kind of like WDW's entire Main Street for me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone.....I've never liked the newer facade....it sticks out like a sore thumb!
