Scholarly Saturdays: Encyclopaedia Britannica & Main Street
Thanks to the Devlin family, Daveland readers can enjoy a nostalgic trip back in time with a new weekly series I will be publishing on Saturdays. Back in the 1950’s Encyclpaedia Britannica used to distribute educational filmstrips to Elementary Schools across the great nation. Although my education didn’t start until the 1970’s, I still clearly remember kids being excited about being able to help the teacher with the filmstrip projector. Oh how media has changed in the last few decades! Kids today would probably start riots if forced to watch these low-tech presentations! Anyway...today the series begins with the first roll which focused on Main Street. Each week I will present a few of these priceless frames for your enjoyment! Released in 1957, I am guessing that most of the photography here was completed in 1956.
Huge apologies on the quality of these; obviously they were not duped onto the most stable film stock, as each strip varies in quality, but all of them had turned to magenta. Still, some of the scenes captured here are rare enough that I think you will still get a bang out of them!
How Walt Disney was able to talk this company into doing an educational series on his Amusement Park is a testament to his sheer genius, tenacity, and pure moxie!
